Deer come down to the river here, and kingfishers work it. Whatley Lodge sits at the bottom of a long private gravel drive in a small valley a mile outside Winsham, near Chard, and it is a detached dog friendly lodge for four people with two dogs welcome.

The garden is at the back, up two steps from the house. It is enclosed and private, laid to patio and wood chip, with furniture, a barbecue and a hot tub for five. A small river runs alongside it, which is a large part of the charm and also worth knowing before you arrive if your dog is one that heads for any water it can hear. The owners leave a welcome pack with doggy extras.

Indoors there are two wood burners, one in the living room and one in the big kitchen and dining room, and both rooms have French doors out to the garden. Downstairs is the main bedroom, a king size with a dressing area, beside the bathroom, and the second bedroom upstairs has zip and link singles. The evening falls into place without trying. Dogs walked and dried, one burner lit, the hot tub warming, and the valley gone completely quiet apart from the water.

This is the corner where Somerset meets Dorset and Devon. Forde Abbey and its gardens are close, Chard Reservoir has a nature reserve for a gentle walk with the dogs, and the Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis, Charmouth and West Bay is within half an hour.
