Open hillside starts right outside Whitewalls, a five bedroom house at Llangattock with fantastic panoramic views over to the Sugar Loaf and the Black Mountains. Originally a terrace of traditional quarrymen's cottages, it has been lovingly refurbished as a dog friendly family house for ten, keeping its exposed stonework and beams, and two dogs are welcome.

A large entrance hall with terracotta tiles and a stone feature fireplace makes the welcome. The spacious kitchen has a large electric range cooker, and the long dining table seats all ten. A wood burner, logs provided, sits in a traditional stone fireplace in the living room, and both dogs flop down before it while the board games come out. Outdoor clothing and boots have their own storage in the utility room.

The children have a large playroom with a pool and table tennis table, toys and a games console. Upstairs are five bedrooms and three bathrooms, the super king opening onto an outside wooden terrace. Outside there is a large, enclosed lawned garden with play equipment and an enclosed walled terrace behind, and at the front a sunny stone terrace for barbecues and dining out, watching the sunset while the dogs doze nearby.

Sheep roam all over the hillside and right up to the cottage gates, and the house rule is that dogs are under control throughout. The open hillside gives walking straight from the door, with spectacular routes on Llangattock Mountain, The Blorenge and the Black Mountains. The towpath of the River Usk and the Brecon and Monmouth Canal make gentler strolls before supper in Crickhowell, with its restaurants, independent shops and the dramatic ruins of its castle.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Whitewalls dog friendly?

Yes, Whitewalls welcomes up to two dogs. The house has both a lawned enclosed garden and a walled garden behind it, and a utility room at the end of the hall that was clearly designed with muddy, wet dogs in mind — boots, coats and soggy hounds all dealt with before you reach the rest of the house.

  • Are dogs allowed at Whitewalls year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the owner when booking. What the description does make clear is that the setup — enclosed gardens, a dedicated utility room, and miles of walking on the escarpment above — works well for dogs whatever the weather.

  • What should I know before visiting Whitewalls with my dog?

The one firm rule is that dogs need to be on the lead from the moment you step outside, because sheep come right up to the gates and across the hillside around the house. That said, the escarpment above Llangattock offers 1.5 miles of flat, level walking along old quarry tramroads, with Craig y Cilau nature reserve at the far end — so two dogs will get plenty of good miles without needing to go far.
