Rye stands on a hill that used to be a headland, the sea long since gone from the foot of it and the cobbled streets left up on top. Willow Tree House sits under half a mile from it, five star and dog friendly, twelve people across six bedrooms, five bathrooms, an enclosed lawned garden, and two dogs welcome. The marsh begins at the bottom of the hill.

Six bedrooms against five bathrooms is near enough one each that nobody queues, which at this many people separates a good week from a negotiated one. Lawn behind, enclosed on all sides, with games indoors for the stretch of afternoon when it is nobody's turn to choose. Two dogs loose in a place this size have many rooms available to be shut out of and will, in practice, pick one doorway and lie across it.

It is a reunion house and makes no pretence otherwise. Everybody arrives in four cars, somebody brought far too much food, the wood burner gets lit by a person who did not ask, and two dogs work the kitchen for an hour before giving up and sleeping under the table. Next morning half the party walks into town for breakfast and the other half takes the animals to the shingle.

1.5 miles south, Rye Harbour spreads out as a nature reserve over old shingle ridges and flooded gravel workings, level tracks the whole way through it and terns on the water. Camber Sands is a little further round for the sand itself. Inland the Rother comes down through the levels, country that is flat, quiet and threaded with paths, which for two dogs is a great deal of somewhere to go.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Willow Tree House dog friendly?

Yes, Willow Tree House welcomes up to two dogs. It's a large six-bedroom house with an enclosed lawned garden, so there's plenty of space for dogs to settle in, and the surrounding area — from the shingle at Rye Harbour to the flat, path-threaded levels along the Rother — gives them a lot of good walking country to explore.

  • Are dogs allowed at Willow Tree House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend confirming directly with the property when you book to make sure the dates you have in mind work for you and your dogs.

  • What should I know before visiting Willow Tree House with my dog?

The house accommodates two dogs, so it's worth confirming that detail at the time of booking if you're bringing a pair. The enclosed lawned garden is a real bonus for keeping dogs secure, and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve — about 1.5 miles south — has level tracks throughout, making it an easy outing with dogs in tow. Camber Sands is a little further on if you're after a beach run on sand.
