Cressbrook is a mill village pinned halfway up the side of a dale, which means everything here is either above you or below you. Wye Barn takes six, dog friendly, three bedrooms against two bathrooms, with a fully enclosed garden looking straight out down the valley. Two dogs are welcome. A flat enclosed garden on ground like this is not a thing to take for granted.

Six people, three bedrooms, two bathrooms: a working ratio rather than a tight one. The wood burner is the centre of the evening and the garden takes care of everything else, with a table and chairs standing on it and the dale filling the view above the wall. Two dogs get a fenced square on a hillside where practically nothing else is level.

The pattern here is simple and does not vary a great deal. Out early down the zigzag to the water, along it for as long as anybody wants to keep going, then back up the hill slowly, after which nobody moves again for some time. Two dogs will sleep off the afternoon by the burner and be ready to do the whole thing over by five.

Below the village the river spreads out through a stretch with a name nobody forgets, a flooded stretch held back by the old mill weir with cliffs rising on one side and the path running along the other. Cressbrook Mill stands at the foot of the hill, a great Georgian block put up to spin cotton where the water could turn a wheel. Two dogs get the dale, and the climb back up comes with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Wye Barn dog friendly?

Yes, Wye Barn welcomes up to two dogs. The barn has a fully enclosed garden — no small thing given the steep hillside setting in Cressbrook dale — so your dogs have a safe, fenced space to enjoy without you having to worry about them.

  • Are dogs allowed at Wye Barn year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so they appear to be welcome throughout the year. That said, it's always worth confirming directly with the property before you book, just to be sure.

  • What should I know before visiting Wye Barn with my dog?

The maximum is two dogs, so larger groups of canines won't be possible. The location is genuinely hilly — Cressbrook sits halfway up a dale — so be prepared for steep walks in and out of the valley, which your dogs will likely love but is worth knowing in advance. The enclosed garden and nearby river walks along the dale make it a brilliant base for active dogs.
