Ashover Rock (The Fabrick) Loop (Alton Lane lay-by)
South Yorkshire
Ashover Rock, known locally as The Fabrick, is a gritstone outcrop on the edge of open heathland above the village of Ashover in the Derbyshire hills. This 6.4 km circuit from the Alton Lane lay-by crosses moorland and rough pasture to reach the rock, where views open up across the Amber valley and the surrounding countryside. The terrain is heather, bracken, and coarse grass over peat, giving the walk a wilder, more exposed feel than the distance suggests. The 132 m of ascent comes in short bursts rather than one sustained climb, and the paths are clear enough to follow in good visibility.
Dogs respond well to this dog friendly walk thanks to the open, textured ground and the constant airflow carrying scent across the moor. The heathland provides off-lead potential where livestock are not present, though sheep and cattle graze some of the surrounding fields so lead awareness is needed on the approach and return sections. The rough ground underfoot suits dogs who enjoy working across uneven terrain rather than following smooth paths. There is no water access on the route itself, so carrying water is advisable on warmer days. A compact walk with genuine moorland character that fits well into a half-day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ashover Rock rates 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness, and it's a genuinely rewarding walk for dogs who enjoy wilder, more textured terrain. The open heathland, constant moorland airflow, and varied ground underfoot make it a stimulating outing, and the 6.4 km loop is a manageable length for most dogs.
There's good off-lead potential on the heathland sections where livestock aren't present, and dogs tend to relish the freedom of the open moor here. That said, sheep and cattle graze some of the surrounding fields, so you'll want to keep your dog on the lead on the approach and return sections of the route.
The most important thing to pack is water , there's no water access along the route itself, which can matter on warmer days. The terrain is heather, bracken, and coarse grass over peat, so it suits sure-footed dogs, and the 132 m of ascent comes in short bursts rather than one long climb. There's a pub in the nearby village of Ashover if you fancy rounding off the walk with a break.
