Cromford Canal Towpath Walk (Cromford Wharf)

Cromford Canal runs through the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire, a quiet, tree-lined waterway that forms part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. This 4.8 km circuit from Cromford Wharf follows the towpath south through classic Derwent Valley scenery: still water reflecting overhanging trees, stone bridges, and the wooded valley sides rising on either side. The 44 m of climbing is negligible, and the towpath is flat and well surfaced throughout. The canal was built in 1794 to serve the cotton mills at Cromford, and the industrial heritage adds quiet interest to what is otherwise a gentle waterside stroll. The return can loop through surrounding lanes and woodland to add variety.
