Carsington Water Outer Loop

Carsington Water is Derbyshire's largest reservoir, set in rolling countryside between Ashbourne and Wirksworth with a full perimeter path of 12.9 km that loops the water through a mix of open grassland, woodland strips and waterside sections. The route undulates more than a typical reservoir circuit, with 252 m of climbing spread across the full distance giving the walk a gently rolling quality that keeps it interesting. The water is always in view or close by, and the surrounding hills frame the reservoir attractively from most angles. The paths are wide and well maintained, with sections of tarmac, compacted gravel and grass offering different surfaces throughout.

This is a dog friendly walk that combines proper distance with reliable, year-round conditions. The reservoir margins provide water access at several points for dogs that enjoy paddling, and the waterside scent from reed beds and muddy shoreline keeps noses active. Off-lead potential is moderate, with good stretches along the quieter eastern shore where livestock are absent. The undulating terrain provides more exercise than a flat reservoir circuit, making this a satisfying outing for dogs with reasonable fitness. The wide paths handle busy days well, and the variety of surface and scenery prevents the walk from feeling monotonous over the longer distance. Parking is available at the main visitor centre where facilities include toilets and a cafe.
