1 / 16Bailey’s Barn
Bonsall, Derbyshire
An eighteenth century barn for two at Bonsall in the Peak District, with a private enclosed lawn garden, an outside tap for washing dogs, a wood burner and two dogs welcome free.
Up at Uppertown, the high end of Bonsall, 900 ft above the sea and on top of the highest hill for miles, Bailey's Barn has been set up by owners who plainly keep dogs. There is an outside tap for washing them, a heated cupboard for drying coats and boots, a welcome gift and bedding for two dogs, and no charge made for either. The barn itself dates from the 1700s and sleeps two, dog friendly, inside the Peak District National Park.
The courtyard at the front is enclosed and pretty, with lighting, furniture, a firepit and an old stone cheese press, but it shares access with the neighbouring Bell House. The second garden is the private one: an enclosed lawn, seating, a barbecue and long views, and that is where the dogs go to be let off.
Inside, one open room of very high beamed ceilings holds kitchen, table and a living area gathered round the wood burner, with a collection of art on the walls and an original mural. The bed in the one bedroom is a super kingsize, with a shower room beside it, and everything is on the ground floor. Two dogs asleep by the burner is the usual end to the day.
Fields and footpaths leave the barn in every direction, and the Limestone Way passes close by, so the car can stay put and the dogs walked from the door. Below the hill, Matlock Bath and High Tor, Black Rocks above Cromford and the High Peak Trail are all within a couple of miles,. Bonsall has two pubs, a tearoom, and its own hen racing championship.

Book with cottages.comFrequently Asked Questions
Is Bailey's Barn dog friendly?
Bailey's Barn is genuinely set up for dogs rather than just tolerating them. The owners welcome two dogs at no extra charge, provide dog bedding and a welcome gift, and have included an outside tap for washing muddy paws and a heated cupboard for drying coats and boots.
Are dogs allowed at Bailey's Barn year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and with a wood burner inside and a heated drying cupboard for wet gear, the barn is well equipped for visits in any weather. It's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates.
What should I know before visiting Bailey's Barn with my dog?
The barn sleeps two people and accepts up to two dogs, who have their own bedding provided on arrival. There's a private enclosed lawn garden where dogs can be let off the lead safely, and the courtyard at the front, while lovely, is shared with the neighbouring Bell House so is not completely private. Walkers will be pleased to know that fields and footpaths head off from the door in every direction, with the Limestone Way passing close by, so there's no need to drive to find a good walk.
