The owners of The Bobbin keep two dogs of their own, and they know what gets forgotten in the boot. A dog bed, food and bowls are there to borrow at no charge, a waffle towel waits for muddy paws, and treats arrive with the welcome pack. The Bobbin is a dog friendly barn for four at Kelstedge, on the eastern edge of the Peak District above Matlock, with two dogs welcome.

It began as a cow shed and a pig sty, and the feeding trough and the dovecote are still part of the building, along with bare stone walls and oak beams. Everything is on the one floor, the main room open plan, with Italian leather sofas, a cinema sound system, underfloor heating and French doors onto a patio. The two bedrooms are a couple of steps up, one of them opening to a Juliet balcony, and the bathroom has a walk-in shower as well as the bath, handy for rinsing a dog after the woods.

Outside there is an enclosed lawn with patio furniture and three steps within it. The house rule is two dogs on leads at all times, garden included, so it is a place to sit out with the dogs beside you rather than a run. Evenings belong on those leather sofas, a film on and the dogs on the borrowed bed at your feet.

Walking and cycle trails leave from the door, and Ashover Rock is close by for a short loop with a view. Matlock Forest, with its many dog friendly routes, is five minutes by car. Matlock Bath sits in its gorge below High Tor, the Cromford Canal towpath makes a flat walk, and Chatsworth is within twenty minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Bobbin dog friendly?

The Bobbin is genuinely dog friendly in the fullest sense — the owners have two dogs themselves and have thought through what you actually need. A dog bed, food bowls and a waffle towel for muddy paws are all available to borrow at no charge, and treats come tucked into the welcome pack. Up to two dogs are welcome to stay.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Bobbin year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, so it's worth checking directly with the owners to confirm availability for your dates. What's clear is that dogs are a central part of the experience here, not an afterthought, so you're unlikely to find them unwelcome at any time of year.

  • What should I know before visiting The Bobbin with my dog?

The house rule is that dogs must be kept on leads at all times, including in the enclosed garden, so it's a place to relax with your dogs close by rather than let them run free. The garden does have three steps within it, which is worth knowing if your dog has mobility needs. On the upside, walking trails start from the door, Matlock Forest is five minutes by car, and the bathroom has a walk-in shower that comes in very handy for rinsing dogs off after a muddy walk.
