Dolwyddelan Castle & Moel Siabod Viewpoint
Snowdonia National Park
This 6.5 km circular from Dolwyddelan climbs from the valley floor through Gwydir Forest Park, following part of the ancient Sarn Helen Roman road before descending to the river and returning along the valley bottom. Dolwyddelan Castle, built by Llywelyn the Great in the early thirteenth century and later taken by Edward I, sits on a prominent knoll above the village and provides the walk's most dramatic viewpoint. Moel Siabod rises directly to the north, and its full pyramid profile is best seen from the upper section of the route. The 220 m of climbing takes you through conifer forest and open hillside, with the character shifting from enclosed woodland to exposed ground with mountain views as the path gains height.
This is one of Snowdonia's quieter and more rewarding dog friendly walks. The forest section carries resinous conifer scent and damp leaf litter, opening to the sweeter smell of bracken and heather as the path climbs above the treeline. The Afon Lledr in the valley provides water access on the lower sections. Off-lead potential is moderate through the forest, though sheep graze the open hillside above the village so leads are required on the higher ground. The broad, well-surfaced forest tracks make this a practical choice when the high peaks are in cloud, and the combination of Roman road, medieval castle and mountain views gives the walk genuine depth. Suited to dogs comfortable with a mix of woodland and open hill terrain.

The 6.5 km circular route combines broad forest tracks with open hillside, and the Afon Lledr in the valley provides a natural water stop on the lower sections. It's one of Snowdonia's quieter loops, so you're unlikely to encounter heavy foot traffic.
Off-lead potential is moderate , the forest section offers reasonable freedom, but sheep graze the open hillside above the village so you'll need to keep dogs on the lead on the higher ground. It's worth being prepared to switch between the two as the path climbs above the treeline.
The route involves 220 metres of climbing through conifer forest and onto exposed open hillside, so your dog should be comfortable with a mix of woodland and hill terrain. There are no facilities at the trailhead, but Y Gwydyr pub in the village (LL25 0EJ) welcomes post-walk visitors, and parking is available at Dolwyddelan railway station car park (LL25 0SZ) for a small charge.
