Loch Vaa Loop
Perthshire
Loch Vaa is a hidden gem tucked into the Cairngorms pinewoods near Aviemore, a short 3.6km loop through mature Scots pine to a small, often glassy loch that feels utterly secluded despite being minutes from the A9. The path winds through heather and blaeberry beneath tall pines, with the loch appearing suddenly through the trees. A wooden bothy sits on the far shore, adding to the sense of discovery. At just 50 metres of elevation gain, this is a gentle walk that packs an outsized amount of atmosphere into a compact distance.
This quiet little dog friendly walk is ideal for dogs that enjoy woodland exploration without the commitment of a longer route. Off-lead potential is high throughout the pine forest, and the loch provides a clean, sheltered swimming spot that most dogs find irresistible. Livestock risk is negligible within the forest. The soft pine needle paths are easy on paws, and the dense scent of resin, earth and heather keeps noses busy from start to finish. Parking is available at the small trailhead off the B970. Perfect for early morning or evening walks, or as a gentle option on a rest day between bigger Cairngorms outings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Loch Vaa Loop earns a 9/10 for dog friendliness, and it's easy to see why. The pine forest path is soft underfoot, livestock risk is negligible throughout, and the loch itself offers a clean, sheltered swimming spot that most dogs make a beeline for. It's a genuinely lovely option for dogs of all fitness levels.
Off-lead potential is high for most of this walk, with the pine forest providing a safe, enclosed feel and very little livestock risk. The combination of heather, blaeberry, resin-scented air and water access makes it a particularly rewarding off-lead experience for dogs who love to explore.
The trailhead parking is a small free area next to Laggantygown Cemetery on the A95, so spaces are limited and it's worth arriving early, especially on busy Cairngorms weekends. There are no facilities on the route itself, so bring water and any supplies you need , the nearest amenities are in Aviemore or Boat of Garten. At just 3.6km with 50 metres of elevation gain, it's a gentle outing that works well as a rest-day walk or a quieter alternative to the bigger Cairngorms routes.
