Speyside Way: Boat of Garten to Aviemore

Perthshire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10An easy long-distance path section through beautiful Speyside woodland with high off-lead potential; the steam railway return makes the point-to-point format effortless.

This 9.7km section of the Speyside Way links the village of Boat of Garten with Aviemore through the heart of Strathspey, following well-maintained paths through Caledonian pine forest and alongside the River Spey. The route passes through Abernethy Forest and Craigellachie Nature Reserve, both remnants of the ancient pine woodland that once covered much of the Highlands, with the Cairngorm mountains visible through gaps in the trees. Boat of Garten, known for its ospreys that nest at the RSPB Loch Garten reserve nearby, is a quiet start point, while Aviemore provides all the facilities of a Highland resort town. With 195 metres of gentle climbing, the terrain is easy throughout on firm forest tracks and paths.

This is one of the finest dog friendly walks in the Cairngorms for dogs that love woodland and river. Off-lead potential is high throughout the forest, with wide tracks and minimal hazards giving dogs genuine freedom. The River Spey provides water access at several points, and the pine forest floor carries rich, resinous scent year-round. Livestock risk is negligible within the forest. Red squirrels and crested tits are common in the canopy. The Strathspey Railway runs parallel and dogs can ride the heritage steam train back if preferred. Both Boat of Garten and Aviemore have dog-friendly options for refreshments. A linear walk, so arrange transport or use the railway for the return.
