Newstead Abbey Parkland and Japanese Garden Circuit
Nottinghamshire
Newstead Abbey was the ancestral home of Lord Byron and sits within 300 acres of parkland in the Nottinghamshire countryside north of the city. The grounds encompass formal gardens, a Japanese garden with a waterfall, woodland trails, lakeside paths and the atmospheric ruins of the medieval priory that Byron converted into his residence. Byron's beloved Newfoundland, Boatswain, is buried in the grounds with an epitaph the poet wrote himself. The various routes range from short garden loops of 3.2km to longer circuits of 8km through the wider parkland and woodland, with just 52 metres of elevation gain across gentle, rolling ground.
This is a varied and interesting dog friendly walk that combines historical character with genuinely pleasant parkland terrain. Dogs must be kept on leads near the formal gardens and abbey ruins, but the wider woodland and lakeside paths offer more relaxed walking. Off-lead potential is limited overall given the managed estate grounds and other visitors. The lake provides visual interest and the woodland sections carry good scent from mature broadleaf canopy. Livestock risk is low. The estate has a café with outdoor seating, toilets and good parking facilities. The Japanese garden is worth seeking out for its unusual planting, and the abbey ruins provide an atmospheric backdrop throughout. A walk with enough cultural interest to satisfy owners and enough variety to keep dogs engaged.
