Creswell Crags Limestone Gorge and Robin Hood Way

Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge on the Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire border, honeycombed with caves that sheltered Ice Age hunters 50,000 years ago and containing Britain's only authenticated cave art from that period. The basic circuit around Crags Lake is a short 2.4 km, with towering limestone cliffs rising above the water and cave mouths visible on both sides. The 48 m of climbing is gentle, and the paths are well surfaced and accessible throughout. The walk can be extended by picking up the Robin Hood Way long-distance path which passes through the site. The gorge has a dramatic, enclosed quality quite different from the surrounding flat farmland, and the sense of deep history adds real weight to what is otherwise a gentle stroll.

This is a compact dog friendly walk with unique character. The limestone gorge carries cool, mineral scent from the rock faces, and the lakeside provides water interest and birdlife. Dogs must be kept on leads throughout to protect the geological and archaeological features, but the sensory environment is rich enough to keep dogs engaged despite the restriction. The accessible, well-surfaced paths suit dogs of all ages and fitness levels, and the short distance makes this ideal for a focused outing rather than a full day. The visitor centre has toilets and a cafe. A walk that offers something genuinely different, with the Ice Age history adding a dimension you won't find anywhere else in the country.
