Parys Mountain Heritage Trail
North Wales
Parys Mountain on Anglesey's north coast is one of the most visually striking landscapes in Wales, a former copper mine that was the largest in the world during the 18th century. This 3.5km circuit follows the heritage trail through a terrain of vivid ochre, rust-red and purple spoil heaps, shallow toxic pools of brilliant turquoise, and exposed rock faces that look more like a Martian landscape than a Welsh hillside. The mining ceased in the 19th century but the mineral contamination has prevented vegetation from reclaiming the workings, preserving an eerie, otherworldly moonscape. At just 100 metres of climbing on gravel paths, the walking is easy but the visual impact is extraordinary.
Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as the mining heritage means some areas have unstable ground and the coloured pools contain dissolved copper and other minerals that are harmful if ingested. Dogs should be kept on leads and away from standing water throughout. The open moorland beyond the mine workings carries good heather scent and the elevated position gives views across to Snowdonia and the Irish Sea. The gravel paths are firm and well-drained. Parking is available at the small car park on the mountain road. Amlwch, the nearest town, has the Dinorben Arms which welcomes dogs. A short but unforgettable walk that shows a completely different side of Anglesey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Parys Mountain Heritage Trail is a good option for dogs, earning a rating of 8/10 on Wildpack Collective. The 3.5km circuit follows firm, well-drained gravel paths with only around 100 metres of climbing, making it an easy walk physically. If you fancy extending the day out, the Dinorben Arms in nearby Amlwch is a dog-friendly pub.
Off-lead potential here is limited, and we'd recommend keeping dogs on the lead throughout the trail. The old mine workings include areas of unstable ground, and the vivid turquoise pools scattered across the landscape contain dissolved copper and other minerals that are harmful if ingested by dogs. Save the off-lead time for somewhere safer , the visual spectacle here is reward enough.
The most important thing to be aware of is the standing water , the colourful mineral pools are toxic and must be kept away from dogs at all times. Beyond that, this is a straightforward walk on good gravel paths, but do keep dogs on leads given the unstable ground in parts of the old workings. There's a free car park on the B5111, and an information board on site helps set the scene for this genuinely extraordinary landscape.
