Red Wharf Bay Coastal Loop
North Wales
Red Wharf Bay is one of the largest bays on Anglesey, a vast expanse of sand and tidal mudflat that stretches for over a mile at low tide with views across to the Great Orme and Snowdonia. This 6.4km circuit combines beach walking with estuary paths along the Afon Nodwydd and quiet lanes through the farmland behind the bay. At low tide the bay feels almost infinite, with firm sand stretching to the waterline and the sky reflected in the wet flats. The village of Red Wharf Bay itself is tiny, just a cluster of houses and the well-known Ship Inn overlooking the water. With 50 metres of gentle climbing on the inland return, this is easy walking throughout.
This dog friendly walk offers a mix of beach freedom and pastoral quiet. Off-lead potential is limited on the inland sections where livestock grazes the fields, though the beach itself provides open space at low tide. Dogs should be kept on leads through the farmland and estuary margins where wading birds feed. The bay provides excellent sea access for swimming and paddling when the tide is in, and the wet sand at low tide is firm and easy on paws. Tide times matter here: check before you go, as the bay fills quickly and the mud can be soft in places. The Ship Inn at Red Wharf Bay welcomes dogs and has fine views across the water. Parking is available near the pub.

On the inland sections of the loop, dogs should be kept on leads as the fields are used for livestock grazing, and leads are also required along the estuary margins where wading birds feed.
