Stanage Edge Full Crest Walk

South Yorkshire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A classic walk along the full length of the Peak District's iconic gritstone escarpment, with sweeping views over the Hope Valley.

Stanage Edge is one of the Peak District's most famous landmarks, and this dog friendly route traces the entire length of the four mile gritstone crest. From Hooks Carr car park the path climbs quickly onto the edge, where a well-worn track follows the clifftop past High Neb, Crow Chin and Stanage End, with huge views stretching across the Hope Valley to Win Hill and Mam Tor. The rocky outcrops, millstones and trig points make for endlessly photogenic terrain, and climbers scrambling below add to the atmosphere.

Dogs are welcome off lead on the open access moorland, though a lead is wise near the edge itself, where drops are sheer and climbers may be working routes below. Sheep graze the plateau so recall needs to be reliable, and the high gritstone path can be hard on paws in very hot or icy conditions. Parking at Hooks Carr is pay and display and busy at weekends; there are no toilets or refreshments on site, so come prepared. Bring water, as sources on the edge itself are limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Stanage Edge Full Crest Walk dog friendly?

Stanage Edge Full Crest Walk earns a strong 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness, making it a great choice for a day out with your dog. The open access moorland welcomes dogs, and the four-mile gritstone crest offers plenty of space to explore, though the exposed terrain and grazing sheep mean it suits dogs with reliable recall best.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Stanage Edge Full Crest Walk?

Dogs are welcome off lead on the open access moorland along Stanage Edge. That said, it's worth keeping them on a lead near the edge itself, where drops are sheer, and sheep graze the plateau so solid recall is essential before letting them roam freely.

  • What should I know before visiting Stanage Edge Full Crest Walk with my dog?

Come prepared, as there are no facilities on site — no toilets, no refreshments, and water sources on the edge are limited, so bring your own for both you and your dog. The high gritstone path can be tough on paws in very hot or icy conditions, so it's worth timing your visit accordingly. Parking at Hooks Carr is pay and display with around thirty spaces and fills quickly on fine weekends, so an early start is a good idea; the nearest cafes and toilets are in Hathersage village, a short drive away.
