Temple Newsam Estate Walk
West Yorkshire
Temple Newsam is a Tudor-Jacobean house on the eastern edge of Leeds where dogs can run off lead across most of the 1,500 acre estate, away from the house itself, built between 1500 and 1520 and the birthplace of Lord Darnley, husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. Its grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown in the 18th century, and the estate of more than 1,500 acres of parkland, woodland, farmland and gardens now belongs to Leeds City Council. This 3.5km loop from the car park beside the house heads out past the Little Temple, down through the woods and rhododendron walk to the chain of ponds and lakes, and back up across the open park to the house and stable courtyard. The paths are mostly surfaced or firm, with a few steep sections and some mud after rain, and signposted trails lead further across the estate.
This is a dog friendly walk with lots of space for a dog to run. The estate asks for dogs to be on a lead near the house, but under close control they can be walked off lead on the grassy parkland, field-side tracks, ancient woodland and perimeter tracks. Dogs are not allowed inside the house, the roofed buildings or Home Farm, the rare breeds farm. Keep your dog away from the wildfowl on the lakes and from farm animals behind the fences. The woods give plenty of shade. Dogs on leads are welcome at the Tea Rooms, and there are toilets in the stable courtyard.
