A Norman castle on a knoll above the River Adur, free and open, giving your dog a compact grassy hill with views over the South Downs gap.
One tall wall and a very good position. Bramber Castle sits on a high natural knoll overlooking the River Adur where it cuts through the South Downs, built soon after the Conquest to hold that gap for William I. It became the Sussex seat of the de Braose family. What survives is largely earthworks and one dramatic fragment: a single wall of the tower still standing 14 metres high.
Whilst you take in that wall and trace the earthworks, your dog gets the knoll, which is what makes this work. It is a compact grassy hill with a circuit round the banks, tree cover at the edges and long views over the Adur valley and the Downs beyond. Free and open, so it functions as a regular walk rather than a one off.
Two practical points. The car park at the castle is currently closed on safety grounds, and the nearest parking is a short walk further into the village with a £2 charge for non-members. It is open any reasonable daylight hours. No dog rules are published for the site, so keep your dog on a lead where the ground drops away.
