Helmsley has been a medieval fortress, an Elizabethan mansion, a Civil War stronghold under siege and a Georgian romantic ruin, and you can see all four in the stonework. The tall keep-like east tower still dominates the town, split down the middle where it was slighted after the siege.
Whilst you work through the castle and the exhibition, your dog gets the earthworks, which are what make this a walk rather than a look round: spectacular double banks and ditches ring the site, and you can walk right round them for views of the exterior, the parkland and, in season, wildflowers in the ditch bottoms. This is also one of the more generous dog policies in the portfolio, with dogs on short leads welcome in the grounds, the shop and the museum, so nobody sits outside.
Helmsley is a good base. The Cleveland Way starts in the town, Duncombe Park is next door and Rievaulx Abbey is a few miles up the valley. Parking is a large public pay and display beside the entrance, charged for everyone and not managed by English Heritage. Café, toilets and picnic seating on site, and your dog is welcome at the outdoor tables.
