This 9.7km loop connects two of the finest historical sites on the North York Moors western edge: the atmospheric ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery set deep in its wooded valley, and the market town of Helmsley with its medieval castle. The route follows the valley of the River Rye through mixed woodland, climbing to Rievaulx Terrace where the 18th-century landscaped viewpoint gives one of Yorkshire's most celebrated vistas down to the abbey ruins. The return crosses farmland and drops through Duncombe Park, a grand estate with ancient trees and sweeping parkland. With 379 metres of ascent, the terrain is genuinely hilly with satisfying ups and downs.
