A dog that likes to come and go as it pleases will get on well here. Brookside House is a three bedroom family home just outside Pickering, where the North York Moors begin, a dog friendly house for two dogs, and its back garden is enclosed, so the door can be left open and the dogs can wander in and out.

The garden has a large patio and a sitting-out area, and the dining room looks straight onto it from a big heated conservatory, so meals can be eaten inside or out with the dogs in view either way. The kitchen adjoins it, with a breakfast bar, and downstairs there is a shower for anyone who comes back muddier than expected.

The living room at the front has an open fire, a real one, and that is where the evening ends up, dogs stretched in front of the hearth and the fire popping. Upstairs, the main bedroom has a super king bed, the second a double, and the third a single day bed with a trundle beneath it for a child, with the family bathroom alongside. A stairgate is available if the dogs are to stay downstairs at night.

Pickering is 1.5 miles away, where the North Yorkshire Moors Railway sets off north across the heather to Grosmont and on to Whitby. There is an enclosed dog exercise field about ten minutes' walk from the house, which is useful for a dog that needs a proper run off the lead. Dalby Forest, the Hole of Horcum and Levisham Moor are all a short drive, and Castle Howard is not much further.
