Newtondale Gorge Walk from Levisham Station
North Yorkshire
Newtondale is a dramatic ice-age meltwater gorge carved through the North York Moors, and this dog friendly circuit leaves Levisham Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, climbs the gorge side through oak and birch woodland to the heathery moor top, then drops back through bracken to the platform. The steam trains passing below the path are a big bonus for rail-curious walkers.
Dogs can be off lead through the woodland and on the broad moor tops, but you will share the route with sheep on several open moor sections so lead up when stock is in view. One enclosed stile will need a lift for larger dogs. Cliff edges in the gorge are steep but usually well back from the path. Underfoot is soft woodland path, firm moor track and one flight of steps. Parking is at Levisham Station with a £2 suggested donation to NYMR, with overflow space further back along the approach road. Dogs are welcome on NYMR trains and in the Horseshoe Inn at Levisham village.
