A semi-detached cottage for two at Hawsker near Whitby, with a galleried bedroom, an enclosed private garden with a barbecue and one dog welcome.

The old railway line between Whitby and Scarborough passes a few hundred yards from this cottage, a 21 mile track now given over to walkers, cyclists and a great many dogs. The Hideaway is a semi-detached, dog friendly cottage for two at Hawsker, just inland from the coast, with one dog on the booking and a doggy welcome pack laid out for it.

Outside is a private garden, enclosed, with seats and a barbecue; the dog has it to run round while its people sit with a glass of something. Two steps lead up to the door. The cottage has been thoroughly renovated, and it is tucked away in a quiet, secluded corner of the village.

Downstairs is one open room, living area, dining table and kitchen together, with an electric fire and a separate toilet off it. The bedroom is a gallery above, with a double bed and its own bathroom, so the dog can look up at whoever has gone to bed and decide whether to follow. For two people and one dog it is a neat, simple arrangement that leaves the days free for walking.

Whitby is a couple of miles away, its abbey ruins high on the cliff above the harbour and the 199 steps climbing up to them. Robin Hood's Bay is about 3 miles the other way, a jumble of red roofs dropping down to the shore, where a dog can explore the rock pools at low tide. The moors start inland, with Falling Foss and its woodland waterfall close by.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Hideaway dog friendly?

Yes, The Hideaway welcomes one dog. On arrival you'll find a doggy welcome pack laid out, and outside there's a private enclosed garden where your dog can roam freely while you sit back and relax.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Hideaway year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given its location near the old Whitby to Scarborough railway line — a 21-mile trail that's a brilliant year-round walking route — it's well set up for dog-owning guests whatever the season.

  • What should I know before visiting The Hideaway with my dog?

The cottage accepts one dog per booking, so it's not the place for a multi-dog household. There are two steps up to the front door, which is worth bearing in mind if your dog has mobility issues. Inside, the layout is open-plan downstairs with a galleried bedroom above, giving your dog plenty of options for where to settle — or not, as they see fit.
