North Elmham Chapel

A Norman chapel on the probable site of the Saxon cathedral of East Anglia, later a fortified manor, with compact level earthworks for your dog.
An unusual story for a small set of ruins, and the panels on site tell it well. The Norman chapel here stood on the site of an earlier timber church, very probably the Saxon cathedral of East Anglia, making this ground far more significant than the modest remains suggest. Then in the 14th century Henry Despenser, the notably unpopular Bishop of Norwich who put down the Peasants' Revolt in East Anglia with considerable violence, converted the chapel into a fortified manor house with a moat and earthworks.
Whilst you work out the sequence from cathedral site to church to fortified residence, your dog gets a compact, level, grassy site with earthworks to walk, quiet and rarely visited, on the edge of a Norfolk village.
Free and open any reasonable time during daylight hours, closing at 8pm or dusk if earlier. Dogs are not covered by any published rules here, so keep your dog on a lead around the ruins and the moat earthworks. There are no facilities on site, though the village is close by.
