Nympsfield Long Barrow

Built by some of the earliest farming communities in the Cotswolds nearly 5,000 years ago, Nympsfield Long Barrow stands high on the scarp edge with the Severn Valley spread below. Its internal chambers have been uncovered, so unlike most long barrows you can see the structure of the tomb: the passage and side chambers laid open, which makes it far easier to understand what these monuments actually were.
While you look down into the chambers, your dog gets the setting, which is what makes this a genuinely good stop. It sits within Coaley Peak Viewpoint, a picnic site on the scarp with mown grass, benches and one of the best views in Gloucestershire, and the Cotswold Way runs along the edge, so you can turn it into a proper walk in either direction.
Free and open. Find it at Coaley Peak Viewpoint off the B4066, about half a mile north of the crossroads for Frocester and Nympsfield, and note English Heritage warn the postcode is a guide only. No dog rules are published. Please keep dogs off the barrow itself and on a lead near the scarp edge, where the drop is severe.
