Uley Long Barrow (Hetty Pegler's Tump)

A 37 metre Neolithic chambered mound on the Cotswold scarp, free, with the Cotswold Way and beech woods alongside for your dog.

Everyone calls it Hetty Pegler's Tump, after Hester Pegler who owned the land in the 17th century, and the name has stuck far better than the official one. Uley Long Barrow is a partially reconstructed Neolithic chambered mound, 37 metres long, on the Cotswold scarp overlooking the Severn Valley. Be aware that what you see is substantially the product of Dr John Thurnham's excavation and reconstruction in 1854, with repairs in 1871, 1891 and 1906.

While you take in a restored monument rather than an untouched one, your dog gets a superb position: it sits just off the Cotswold Way with long views west across the Severn to the Forest of Dean and the Welsh hills, and the beech woods along the scarp give shade and a proper walk.

Free and permanently open. This site is unstaffed and carries no published dog rules. The barrow is reached across a field which is often grazed, so keep your dog on a lead and close gates, and please keep dogs off the mound itself. Roadside parking only and it is tight. Nympsfield Long Barrow and Coaley Peak are a short distance along the scarp.
