A hilltop castle above Castleton reached only by a steep climb, with one of the finest views in the Peak District for you and a fit dog.
You have to earn this one. Peveril towers above Castleton and is reachable only by an invigorating uphill climb, with the castle naturally defended by sheer drops into Cave Dale on one side and Peak Cavern Gorge on the other. English Heritage have put benches along the path for tired walkers, which tells you what to expect.
Whilst you take in the Norman keep and one of the finest views in the Peak District, straight down onto the village and out along the Hope Valley, your dog gets a proper climb on a good path then open grass at the top, with Cave Dale running up from Castleton as one of the best short walks in the Peak.
Dogs on leads are welcome at Peveril Castle. Be realistic about the climb, because it is steep and sustained and not suitable for an older dog or one with joint problems. Parking is the charged main village car park, five minutes away, and Castleton gets extremely busy on summer weekends. There is a café, shop, toilets, exhibition and picnic seating.
