Verulamium was the third largest town in Roman Britain, and this is what is left of the wall that defended it. Built between AD 265 and 270, the circuit ran for two miles and can still be traced for most of its length, with a substantial section standing in Verulamium Park along with the foundations of towers and the London Gate. At its peak the wall stood five metres high and carried a walkway protected by a parapet nearly two metres tall.

While you trace the circuit, your dog gets one of the easier heritage visits in the country, because the wall sits inside a large public park with lakes, open grass and mature trees, so it functions as a proper walk rather than a monument stop. The Verulamium Museum and the Roman theatre are nearby, and the River Ver runs through.

Free and permanently open. There are no posted dog rules here, because the wall stands in a council park, so the park's own rules apply: check signage on arrival, keep your dog under close control and on a lead near the lakes and the road. Parking, café and toilets are in the park.
