A Neolithic chambered tomb you can crawl inside, free and open, reached with your dog across a stream and up a field. Bring a torch.

You can go in, which changes everything. Stoney Littleton is one of the finest accessible examples of a Neolithic chambered tomb in the country, dating from about 3500 BC, 30 metres long with multiple burial chambers opening off a central passage. English Heritage's own advice is to bring a torch and experience the chambers at first hand. Look for the ammonite fossil cast in one of the entrance stones, which the builders clearly chose deliberately.

Whilst you crouch along a passage built five and a half thousand years ago, your dog gets the approach, which makes this a proper little outing rather than a car park visit: the walk from the road crosses a stream and climbs a field in a quiet Somerset valley near Wellow.

Free and permanently open. The site has no published dog policy. The approach is across working farmland which is usually grazed, so keep your dog on a lead and close gates. The path can be very muddy. There are no facilities and parking is limited roadside space.
