A battlefield marker on a good ridge. The monument was erected in the 18th century to commemorate Sir Bevil Grenville, the Royalist commander, and the Cornish pikemen who fought with him at the Battle of Lansdown in 1643. It marks the spot where he fell during the uphill assault, and it is an unusually handsome thing for a roadside memorial, with heraldic panels and a griffin on top.

As you take in the memorial, your dog gets the reason to actually come: it stands on Lansdown Hill above Bath on the Cotswold scarp, and the ridge gives open ground, long views west over the Avon valley and the Severn, and the Cotswold Way running along the top. That is a far better option than trying to walk a dog in the middle of Bath.

Free and permanently open. No dog guidance is posted for the monument. It sits close to a road on open ground that is grazed at times, so keep your dog on a lead. There are no facilities here, though Bath is a short drive away.
