Tintagel is the rare site that lives up to its own mythology. Between the 5th and 7th centuries this island fortress was the stronghold of Cornish rulers wealthy enough to trade with the Mediterranean, and by the 12th century Geoffrey of Monmouth had written that King Arthur was conceived here. The ruins straddle a chasm, half on the mainland and half on the island, and a footbridge now hangs where the medieval crossing once ran.

While you cross to the island, find the Gallos sculpture and pick through the early medieval foundations, your dog gets the full Atlantic: salt and wet slate in the air, gulls working the updraughts at head height, and the sea moving underneath you the whole way round. Time it with a falling tide and the sandy cove and Merlin's Cave open at the foot of the cliff.

English Heritage are blunt about the terrain and so are we. Lots of steps, live cliff edges and nesting birds, so leads stay on throughout. A fit dog will love it. An older one, or short legs, will struggle, and at £18.70 an adult you want to know that before you book. If your dog is not up to the island, the mainland courtyard still gives you the view.
