Dungeness Beach

Kent

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10An extraordinary shingle desert unlike anything else in Britain, with lighthouses, fishing huts and a power station creating a genuinely otherworldly setting.

Dungeness Beach is vast, exposed and completely unlike any other stretch of coastline in Britain. The largest shingle foreland in Europe, Dungeness is a flat expanse of pebbles stretching to the horizon, with the old lighthouse, the nuclear power station and scattered fishermen's huts creating a surreal, almost post-apocalyptic landscape. The artist Derek Jarman's famous garden sits among the shingle cottages, and the whole place has a stark, otherworldly beauty. The shingle is deep and the beach shelves steeply into the sea, with strong currents offshore making swimming unsuitable for dogs.

Dogs are welcome year-round with no restrictions on this dog friendly beach, and the sheer scale and emptiness make it one of the most spacious coastal environments in the southeast. The deep shingle demands effort underfoot, so it suits dogs comfortable on unstable ground — this is not a beach for flat-out sprinting but for purposeful, atmospheric walking. The tide line carries powerful scent from kelp, driftwood and maritime debris, and the exposed position means the wind is a constant feature. The birdlife is exceptional — Dungeness is an RSPB reserve — with migrating species regularly spotted. The surreal landscape, vast openness and wild character make every visit feel like an expedition to the edge of the world. Parking is available near the beach.
