Whitley Bay Beach

Tyne and Wear

Dog Friendly Rating:6/10Whitley Bay's Blue Flag beach with the restored Spanish City dome, offering year-round dog access north of Panama Gardens and a seasonal ban on the southern section from 1 May to 30 September.

Whitley Bay Beach is a wide, Blue Flag-awarded sandy beach on the North Tyneside coast, backing a traditional seaside resort town. The beach is long and open, with a promenade running its full length, and the iconic Spanish City dome entertainment complex overlooking the seafront has been recently restored and reopened. The beach is popular with local families and dog walkers, and the town has a good range of cafes, restaurants and amenities. The northern section of the beach, north of Panama Gardens, has a more open character and lower visitor numbers than the busy central promenade area.

A seasonal dog ban applies to the southern section of Whitley Bay beach from 1 May to 30 September under the North Tyneside Dog Exclusion Order. Dogs are banned from the section south of Panama Gardens during this period. The northern section of the beach, north of Panama Gardens, remains open to dogs year-round. Outside the restricted season, the full beach is available and makes for an excellent long coastal walk. The Spanish City complex and nearby cafes are generally dog friendly outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Whitley Bay Beach dog friendly?

Whitley Bay Beach is a popular spot for dog walkers, though it comes with some seasonal restrictions to be aware of. The northern section of the beach, north of Panama Gardens, is open to dogs year-round, and the wider town has good amenities including cafes that are generally welcoming to dogs outside. We've rated it 6/10 for dog friendliness overall.

  • Are dogs allowed at Whitley Bay Beach year round?

It depends on which part of the beach you're heading to. The northern section, north of Panama Gardens, is open to dogs throughout the year. However, a seasonal dog ban applies to the southern section from 1 May to 30 September under the North Tyneside Dog Exclusion Order, so you'll need to stick to the northern stretch during summer months.

  • What should I know before visiting Whitley Bay Beach with my dog?

The key thing to plan around is the seasonal dog ban on the southern section, which runs from 1 May to 30 September — during this period, keep to the beach north of Panama Gardens. Outside the banned season, the full beach opens up for a great long coastal walk. Parking is available in pay-and-display car parks on The Promenade and in the town centre, and the restored Spanish City complex and nearby cafes are generally dog friendly outside.
