The beach is long and open, with a promenade running its full length, and the iconic Spanish City dome entertainment complex overlooking the seafront has been recently restored and reopened. The beach is popular with local families and dog walkers, and the town has a good range of cafes, restaurants and amenities. The northern section of the beach, north of Panama Gardens, has a more open character and lower visitor numbers than the busy central promenade area.
A seasonal dog ban applies to the southern section of Whitley Bay beach from 1 May to 30 September under the North Tyneside Dog Exclusion Order. Dogs are banned from the section south of Panama Gardens during this period. The northern section of the beach, north of Panama Gardens, remains open to dogs year-round.
