Cullercoats to Tynemouth Coastal Walk

Tyne and Wear

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10Dogs walk this promenade and clifftop route on the lead past three sandy bays, ending at Tynemouth Priory and Castle for their humans to explore.

This coastal walk links the fishing village of Cullercoats to Tynemouth along one of North Tyneside's best known stretches of coast, starting near the Adamson Memorial fountain on Cullercoats seafront and heading south past the Collingwood Monument and Tynemouth Longsands to the headland where Tynemouth Priory and Castle stand above King Edwards Bay. Dogs are welcome on the clifftop paths and promenade year round, though the main beaches have a seasonal dog ban from 1 May to 30 September, and the busy promenade is generally a lead walk. The 8km round trip mixes clifftop paths and promenade, with the option to drop onto the beach at Tynemouth on the return leg, and takes in Cullercoats Bay, the lifeboat station and the wide sweep of Longsands along the way. There is around 112 metres of gentle climbing overall, mostly where the path rises and falls along the low cliffs, and the going underfoot is mostly paved.

This is a dog friendly coastal walk with dogs welcome on the clifftop paths and promenade throughout the year, though the beaches themselves have a seasonal dog ban from 1 May to 30 September on the main stretches of Cullercoats Bay, King Edwards Bay and the southern ends of Longsands and Whitley Bay. Outside those months, dogs can enjoy the sand as well as the paths above. Take care near the cliff edges around Tynemouth headland, and keep dogs close on the busier promenade sections in summer. Tynemouth and Cullercoats both have plenty of dog-friendly cafes and pubs for a stop along the way.
