Farms and Firesides: Dog Friendly Cottages with Hot Tubs in Conwy County

Written by Sam Wright

Conwy's dog friendly hot tubs are a farming story rather than a seaside one, which will surprise anybody who knows the county only from the promenade at Llandudno. None of the twelve below is on the coast. Five sit in the Conwy valley between the walled town and Maenan, six are scattered through the hill parishes around Llannefydd, Llanfairtalhaiarn and Betws yn Rhos, and the last is a smallholding over the eastern boundary in Flintshire, included because it earns the place and flagged because it is not strictly in Conwy at all. Barns, a granary, a milking shed and a shepherd's hut account for a good share of them.

That rural spread is the useful part for a dog owner. Each was picked out of the Wildpack stays directory, which lists every bookable property we know of, and each clears the same three tests: the owners call the garden enclosed in their own listing, the dog allowance is written as a number, and the hot tub is on site. Dog numbers range from one to four, beds from two to twelve, and seven of the twelve carry a five star grading. What the list asks in return is a car, because the nearest dog beach is at least three miles from every door and the listed walks are further still from more than half of them.

Sunken Treasure

A shepherd's hut a mile from Conwy with a sunken enclosed garden, a deck and a hot tub

A shepherd's hut for two people and two dogs, a mile outside Conwy, standing in a garden dropped below the level of the ground around it. That sunken ground is enclosed, so the boundary rises above the dogs rather than running at their shoulder, and the deck holding the hot tub is described as secluded. Inside there is a double bed, a sofa, a breakfast bar kitchen and a shower room, warmed by electric heaters rather than any kind of stove.

It is the closest thing in this guide to a town stay, and the walking figures reflect that: the Penmaenmawr upland loop is 3.4 miles off, the shortest drive to a listed walk anywhere on the list, and Llandudno West Shore is 3.8. The trade is company. A shared games room with a wood burner and a separate sauna sit on the same site, so there are other guests about, and a hut sized exactly for two leaves no slack for a friend or a third dog.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, on the secluded deck
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, sunk below the surrounding ground
  • Nearest dog beach: Llandudno West Shore, 3.8 miles
  • Best for: A couple who want the castle town on a lead by day and a quiet deck at night

Conwy Valley Manor House

A 16th century stone manor house above the river at Tal y Cafn in the Conwy valley with a walled garden

A wall runs round half an acre here, with fruit trees, lawn and the hot tub all inside it, about as secure as a garden boundary gets. The house is 16th century stone and timber above the river at Tal y Cafn, five star, sleeping eight across four bedrooms reached by two separate staircases at opposite ends. A wood burner heats the lounge and the snug has its own fire, and the utility takes coats, boots and dog before anybody reaches the old floors.

One dog is the allowance, and it stays on the ground floor, because dogs are not permitted upstairs and a stair gate is supplied to make the point. For a single well settled animal that costs little, but anyone used to a dog on the bed should look elsewhere. Outside the wall it is sheep country, so the lanes up past the Roman fort at Caerhun and the drovers' road over Tal y Fan are lead walking for most of their length.

  • Sleeps: 8 across 4 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 1, ground floor only
  • Hot tub: Yes, inside the walled garden
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, half an acre, walled
  • Nearest dog beach: Colwyn Bay Beach, 5.6 miles
  • Best for: Two families sharing one calm dog and a very secure garden

The Tardis, Eglwysbach

A two bedroom house at Eglwysbach in Conwy with a fenced lawn, a hot tub and a courtyard behind

The route through runs dining room, bath, kitchen, conservatory, and then a fully fenced lawn with borders and the hot tub at the far end of it. Past that is a small courtyard the owners call secret, which two dogs will annex on day one. The Tardis sleeps three in two bedrooms at Eglwysbach, on the eastern side of the valley where the slope gives out onto the flat, and both bedrooms look down on the garden.

Three beds is an odd number and it shapes who books: a couple with a friend, or parents with one child, rather than two couples. The utility is not in the house at all but across that courtyard, which keeps wet dogs and muddy boots out of the sitting rooms and means a dash through the rain to reach the tumble dryer. The owners live on site. Tal-y-Cafn and the tidal river are a mile downhill, flat walking with birds on the marsh.

  • Sleeps: 3 across 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, at the end of the lawn
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, fully fenced, with a second courtyard
  • Nearest dog beach: Colwyn Bay Beach, 6.1 miles
  • Best for: Three people and two dogs who like a riverbank before breakfast

Maes Yr Hendre, Maenan

A stone farmhouse at Maenan in the Conwy valley with an enclosed garden holding a hot tub

The back door opens into a boot room, and behind it are the utility, the coat hooks and a full shower room, so a dog fresh from the river is intercepted before the kitchen. Maes Yr Hendre is a five star stone farmhouse at Maenan, refurbished in 2019 with its beams and high ceilings left alone, and it lists a drying room among its dog facilities. The garden is enclosed with the hot tub, loungers and a barbecue on it, and the valley opens up in both directions from the lawn.

Eight people and two dogs is the balance here, so a group bringing an animal per household will need to count before booking. The coast is the other thing to weigh: Colwyn Bay Beach is 8 miles, among the longer runs to sand on this list. What the valley floor offers instead is level lanes and field paths, and a ground floor double beside the shower room that lets an older dog skip the stairs altogether.

  • Sleeps: 8 across 4 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, in the enclosed garden
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with loungers and a barbecue
  • Dog facilities: Drying room, boot room at the entrance
  • Best for: A family party with one elderly dog and a wet forecast

Nyth Y Wennol - Conwy, Maenan

A one bedroom barn conversion at Maenan with an enclosed garden and a hot tub in a sheltered corner

A freestanding bath stands next to the king-size bed, which tells you who Nyth Y Wennol was built for. It is a barn conversion for two on a working farm at Maenan, entered downwards through a door hung with coat racks, with one room below for cooking, eating and sitting and the bedroom above. The hot tub is in a sheltered corner of the enclosed garden where nothing overlooks it, with a lawn, loungers and a charcoal barbecue around it.

Only one dog is allowed, and the fire the chairs face is electric, so this is not the choice for a household with two animals or a craving for woodsmoke. The farm makes up for it on foot. Private paths cross the farmland from the door without touching a road, and further west over the ridge Llyn Geirionydd lies in its hollow of rock and conifer, a full circuit of water with a monument to Taliesin above it.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 1
  • Hot tub: Yes, in a sheltered corner of the garden
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, planted, with lawn and loungers
  • Setting: Working farm with private paths
  • Best for: A couple and one dog on a romantic week with no roads to cross

Tyddyn Y Fron Bach, Betws Yn Rhos

A detached barn conversion at Betws yn Rhos in Conwy with a large enclosed garden and a hot tub on the deck

The dog rule here is written by size rather than head count: two small to medium, or a single large one. Tyddyn Y Fron Bach is a detached barn conversion for four at Betws yn Rhos, one open room downstairs with kitchen, dining table and sofas, and a door out of the lounge onto the patio where the hot tub sits on the deck. Beyond it the enclosed garden is spacious, with lawn, furniture and a charcoal barbecue.

Two limits. There is a single bathroom, with the shower over the bath, which four adults will notice by the second morning, and the fire is an electric log effect rather than a burner. It also has the longest drive to a listed walk in this guide, Llyn Brenig at 12.1 miles. Balancing that, it has the shortest drive to sand: Abergele Beach is 3.3 miles, and the lanes around the village are steep, quiet and farmed.

  • Sleeps: 4 across 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2 small to medium, or 1 large
  • Hot tub: Yes, on the deck off the lounge
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, spacious, with a patio and lawn
  • Nearest dog beach: Abergele Beach, 3.3 miles
  • Best for: Two couples with a big dog who want the coast within a short drive

Cartrefle, Llanfairtalhaiarn

A four bedroom stone house at Llanfairtalhaiarn in Conwy with an enclosed garden above the river and a hot tub

Very few holiday lets come with a fishing right, and Cartrefle has one, along with its own access down to the river that bends through Llanfairtalhaiarn. The house is five star, sleeps eight in two kings and two twins, and gives them two sitting rooms plus a dining room, so a full party can split in the evening without anybody retreating to a bedroom. The wood burner is in one of those sitting rooms; the hot tub and a patio table are on the enclosed garden above the water.

The fishing needs a rod licence, and the river is below the enclosed garden rather than inside it, so a dog with strong opinions about water will need watching on the way down. Two dogs for eight beds is the other constraint. Llyn Brenig, the closest walk we list, sits 10.6 miles away, though Pensarn Beach is only 4.3 and the lanes up the valley climb towards Llansannan.

  • Sleeps: 8 across 4 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, on the enclosed garden above the river
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with a patio and gas barbecue
  • Also: River access and fishing, space for bikes and paddleboards
  • Best for: A group with an angler in it and two dogs content on a riverbank

Ty Ucha, Llannefydd

A 16th century gentry house above Llannefydd in Conwy with a large enclosed lawn and a hot tub

Five bathrooms, and one of them is a shower out on the lawn. Ty Ucha is a 16th century gentry house for eight above Llannefydd, five star, four king-size bedrooms, an Aga in a beamed kitchen, and a large enclosed lawn at the end of a lane that goes nowhere much. The hot tub and a gas barbecue are out there with the shower, which sits on the route back indoors and stops the fields following the dogs into the house.

The layout is the thing to check. Rooms lead one into the next rather than off a hall, and there is a step between nearly every pair of them, with two down into the lounge, which is a lot of small climbs for a dog with stiff legs. The ground floor king with its own bathroom answers part of that. Two dogs is the standard allowance, but the owner will talk about a third, the only place in the guide where the number is openly negotiable.

  • Sleeps: 8 across 4 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2, a third by arrangement
  • Hot tub: Yes, on the enclosed lawn
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, a large lawn with an outdoor shower
  • Nearest dog beach: Pensarn Beach, 4.7 miles
  • Best for: A large party with a possible third dog and a taste for old houses

Y Daflod, Llannefydd

A barn conversion above Llannefydd in Conwy with an enclosed garden, a games area and a private hot tub

Y Daflod shares its map point with Ty Ucha and makes a useful comparison: similar size, similar grading, very different building. This one was a hayloft, converted in 2019 into a five star barn for eight, with four king-size bedrooms and five bathrooms spread out so nobody queues. The kitchen sits in the middle with a snug on one side and a lounge on the other, a fire in each, and the enclosed garden holds the private hot tub, a gas barbecue, a games area and an outdoor shower by the door.

Two dogs again against eight beds, and Llyn Brenig at 10.8 miles is the closest walk in our listings, so walking here means the lanes and field edges from the gate rather than a named route. Unlike Ty Ucha, it has a pub listed within a mile. St Asaph is a short drive for its tiny 13th century cathedral, with a churchyard and river path below it where dogs are allowed.

  • Sleeps: 8 across 4 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, private, in the enclosed garden
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with a games area and an outdoor shower
  • Nearest dog beach: Pensarn Beach, 4.7 miles
  • Best for: A recent conversion for eight with a pub in walking distance

Cwt Godro, Llannefydd

A converted milking shed on a working farm at Llannefydd in Conwy with an enclosed garden and hot tub

The name means milking shed in Welsh, and the farm around it is still very much at work. Cwt Godro sleeps four at Llannefydd, five star, with two king-size bedrooms: one on the ground floor with an en-suite wet room, the other upstairs sharing a Jack and Jill bathroom. A wood burner heats the lounge, with the first basket of logs waiting, and outside the paved patio holds furniture, a charcoal barbecue and the hot tub inside the enclosed garden.

Working farm means tractors on the lane and sheep being moved past the gate, and it means the enclosure is doing real work rather than decoration. Dogs that bark at livestock will have a noisy week and so will everybody else. For a steady pair of dogs it is one of the calmer places here, a pub within a mile, and the Denbigh Moors rising behind the village for long days on forestry tracks and moor roads.

  • Sleeps: 4 across 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, in the enclosed garden
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with a paved patio and barbecue
  • Also: Ground floor wet room, secure bike store
  • Best for: Two couples and two steady dogs who like a farm going on around them

Sgubor Haidd, Llannefydd

A six bedroom granary conversion near Llannefydd in Conwy with an enclosed lawn, patio and games barn

Four dogs, twelve people, six bedrooms and six bathrooms: Sgubor Haidd is the only house in this guide built for a crowd, and the only one where a dog sitting service can be arranged. It was the farm's granary and keeps its beams and stone walls, with a log burner at the end of the open living space, a mezzanine snug above, and a utility boot room for whatever four dogs carry in. Half of the six bedrooms are downstairs.

A dog for every three guests sounds generous until you picture twelve people who each own one, so it suits two or three households better than a whole extended family with pets. The hot tub, a large paved patio and an enclosed lawn sit outside with a games barn that has its own kitchen and pizza oven. Field paths leave the yard. The listed walks and beaches are drives, though: Moel Famau at 8.2 miles and Gronant Beach at 7.3.

  • Sleeps: 12 across 6 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 4
  • Hot tub: Yes
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, a lawn off a large paved patio
  • Dog facilities: Drying room, boot room, dog sitting by arrangement
  • Best for: A celebration for twelve with several dogs in tow

Cimwch Farm Cottage, Afonwen

A cottage on a smallholding near Afonwen in Flintshire with an enclosed garden and a wood fired hot tub

Strictly speaking this one is in Flintshire, not Conwy, roughly nine miles east of the Llannefydd cluster, and it is here because it offers the thing the rest of the list lacks: a national trail from the door. Offa's Dyke path is reachable straight from the cottage, on a five acre smallholding near Afonwen. Four people sleep in a king and a twin, three dogs are welcome, and the enclosed garden holds a chiminea and a hot tub fired by wood, with the wood supplied.

Wood fired means slow. Somebody has to light it in the afternoon for it to be hot by evening, which suits a walking day and frustrates anyone wanting a quick soak at lunchtime. There is no pub listed within a mile, and the nearest dog beach, Gronant Beach, is 8.9 miles off, the furthest on the list. The Moel Famau circuit from Loggerheads is closer at 5.9, and the coal fire in the lounge takes care of the rest.

  • Sleeps: 4 across 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 3
  • Hot tub: Yes, wood fired, in the enclosed garden
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with a chiminea and patio furniture
  • Also: Bike washdown and lockable bike bar
  • Best for: Walkers with three dogs who want Offa's Dyke from the gate

Practical Advice for a Hot Tub Stay in Conwy

A few things that separate a good week from an awkward one across these twelve:

  • Choose a side of the county first. The Conwy valley group sits near the walled town, the estuary and the mountains to the south. The Llannefydd group is quieter, higher and closer to the coast at Abergele and Pensarn. They make for quite different holidays.
  • Count dogs against beds. Four of the houses for eight stop at two dogs and the manor house at one. Only Sgubor Haidd takes four, and Cimwch takes three in a cottage for four.
  • Ask where the dog sleeps. Dogs are not allowed upstairs at Conwy Valley Manor House. Ground floor bedrooms at Ty Ucha, Maes Yr Hendre, Cwt Godro and Sgubor Haidd help an older animal.
  • Check the fire you are getting. Nyth Y Wennol and Tyddyn Y Fron Bach have electric fires and Sunken Treasure runs on electric heaters. If a real flame matters, look at the farmhouses and barns instead.
  • Expect livestock. Several of these are working farms, and the hills around Tal y Fan and the Aled are grazed. Keep leads on through the fields.
  • Keep dogs out of the tub. Treated hot water irritates skin and claws puncture liners. The enclosed garden is what makes these places dog friendly, not the water.

Final Thoughts

Conwy suits people who want a farm week with a hot tub attached, not a resort break. The strength of these twelve is the enclosed ground around them, walled at Tal y Cafn, sunken outside the town, farm fenced at Llannefydd, and the steep, quiet lanes that start from most of the gates. The weakness is that nothing sits on the coast, so beach days mean driving.

Couples have the best choice: Sunken Treasure for the town, Nyth Y Wennol for privacy, both at the small end. Groups of eight have five houses to pick from, though each caps the dogs at two or fewer. Anyone arriving with three or four dogs is really choosing between Sgubor Haidd and the cottage over the border at Afonwen, and the Offa's Dyke path from that door is a strong argument for the drive.
