Salt and Steam: Dog Friendly Hot Tub Cottages Near a Dog Friendly Beach

Written by Sam Wright

Booking the tub is the easy half. The hard half is the beach: one that takes dogs, near enough that an animal arrives at the water already emptied out, with a garden around the tub that is genuinely shut in rather than open at one corner. The twelve properties below hold all of it at once. They sit in twelve different counties, from the Solway marshes to the southern tip of the Isle of Wight, and the distance to the nearest dog beach is given in miles rather than described as handy.

Everything here is drawn from listings we keep ourselves, browsable as a directory of stays, and each entry had to clear four bars: a hot tub, a garden the owners themselves call enclosed, a dog number written into the booking, and sand inside five miles that allows dogs. The allowances run from one animal to four. The buildings run from a lodge for two above Woolacombe to a seven bedroom house for fourteen near Harlech. None of them ask you to choose between the water outside the back door and the water at the end of the lane.

Hartnolls Lodge Woolacombe, Devon

A single storey lodge above Woolacombe in Devon with a hot tub on level decking in an enclosed rear garden

Three dogs on a booking that sleeps two is the oddity here, and on this coast it turns out to be the useful one. Hartnolls is a single storey lodge above Woolacombe with one king bedroom, the lounge giving through sliding doors onto a fenced rear garden of decking and lawn, and the tub standing on the same plane as everything else. Woolacombe sand is 1.6 miles down the hill and runs for three, with the Morte Point circuit starting a short way beyond it.

The bedroom count is the catch and it does not bend. One bedroom means two people however generous the dog allowance is, so a group has no way into this one. The tub is also emptied and refilled between bookings, which is the right thing for an owner to do and does mean it may still be coming up to temperature when you walk in on a Friday afternoon.

The sand itself is Woolacombe Beach, three miles of Atlantic front divided into zones. The north end closes to dogs from April to the end of September and the middle section goes on lead through the summer, but the southern zone stays open the whole year, and at low tide the firm sand runs out far enough that the zoning stops mattering much. Read the tide table rather than the calendar.

  • Sleeps: 2
  • Dogs welcome: 3
  • Hot tub: Yes, reached on the level in the enclosed rear garden
  • Nearest dog beach: Woolacombe Beach, 1.6 miles
  • Best for: A couple arriving with a full pack of three and no use for a second bedroom

Ravenslaw House, Northumberland

An 1892 country house at the edge of Alnwick in Northumberland with a gated enclosed garden and a hot tub on the patio

Four dogs is the highest allowance in this guide and Ravenslaw is comfortably the largest building in it. Nine bedrooms hold eighteen people, every one of those bedrooms has a bathroom to itself, and a side gate leads through into ground the owners describe as enclosed. The tub sits on the patio. Downstairs runs to a lounge, a dining room with an open fire, a conservatory and a reading room, which is enough separate doors that four animals need never share a floor.

Alnmouth is the listed dog beach at 3.4 miles, but the better walking is closer than the sand. Alnwick Pastures and the River Aln begin 0.8 miles from the door and Hulne Park opens estate ground behind the town, so the coast becomes an afternoon decision rather than the reason to get up. A house of eighteen with four dogs in it is also a specific sort of week, and a couple after quiet should read that number as a warning.

The water is Alnmouth Beach, a short run east to where the Aln opens out into the sea. Wide sand, dunes behind it, dogs welcome every month with no zones to decipher, and it holds up at most states of the tide. For a house on this scale that matters more than it sounds: eighteen people and four dogs need a beach that does not feel crowded the moment they all arrive on it.

  • Sleeps: 18
  • Dogs welcome: 4
  • Hot tub: Yes, on the patio inside the gated garden
  • Nearest dog beach: Alnmouth Beach, 3.4 miles
  • Best for: A large family gathering bringing more dogs than most houses will take

The Pilot House - Polruan, Cornwall

A five bedroom house above Polruan in Cornwall with a landscaped garden, a secure lawn and a wood fired hot tub

The outdoor shower at the back of the house is the detail worth booking this for. The Pilot House stands over Polruan looking across the harbour to Fowey, five bedrooms on three floors, ten beds and three dogs, with a landscaped garden holding a secure lawn and a patio. A wood fired tub stands near the shower, and the hall inside is limestone tiled with real room for coats and boots, so the sand comes off before any of it reaches the stairs.

Polkerris is the nearest dog beach at 2.2 miles, though the coast path east is what the week usually becomes: Lantic Bay drops steeply to a beach that empties the moment the walking gets hard. That descent will not suit every dog or every knee, and the village itself is a set of steps down to a quay, so parking and carrying are worth weighing before you commit. The passenger ferry to Fowey takes ten minutes and saves an hour by road.

Polkerris Beach sits two miles round the water, a sheltered harbour beach with a wall that takes the swell off it. The restriction is the long one in this guide: no dogs from Easter Day to the end of September. From October through to Easter the whole beach is yours, which makes this an off season booking rather than a summer one, and a hot tub argues for that season anyway.

  • Sleeps: 10
  • Dogs welcome: 3
  • Hot tub: Yes, wood fired, beside the outdoor shower on the secure lawn
  • Nearest dog beach: Polkerris Beach, 2.2 miles
  • Best for: A mixed group of ages, with the main bedroom and a wet room on the middle floor

The Retreat - Mawbray, Cumbria

A converted barn at Mawbray on the Cumbrian Solway coast with a private enclosed garden and a hot tub under a pergola

A hot outside hose by the door will do more for a beach week than the tub does. The Retreat is a restored barn at Mawbray, behind the dunes on the Solway coast, sleeping eight with two dogs, and it puts the utility first: coats, boots and everything gritty stop there, with a shower room opening straight off it. The tub goes under a pergola on the patio, the garden around it is private and enclosed, and a second garden beside it has been left to the wildlife.

Allonby is 2.4 miles south and Mawbray Banks starts where the lane runs out, dune and open sand with the Galloway hills across the water. The Lakes are the thing this coast is not. Our nearest listed walk is Latrigg above Keswick at almost eighteen miles, so a fell day from here is a drive rather than a stroll out of the door. Two dogs is also the ceiling, which for a building sleeping eight is on the tight side.

Two and a half miles up the coast, Allonby Beach runs along the Solway inside an AONB, open to dogs all year with nothing to check before you go. The tidal range is the thing to respect here: the sands go out a very long way and the water returns quickly, so keep a walk parallel to the shore rather than striking out across it. There is a dog friendly cafe on the front for afterwards.

  • Sleeps: 8
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, under the pergola in the private enclosed garden
  • Nearest dog beach: Allonby Beach, 2.4 miles
  • Best for: Two families who want Solway dunes instead of Lakeland fells

Tigh Sorcha, Fife

A six bedroom lodge near Leuchars in Fife with an acre of safe enclosed lawn and a hot tub on the patio

An acre of safe enclosed ground inside the fence, and four dogs on the booking. Tigh Sorcha is a six bedroom, six bathroom lodge for twelve near Leuchars, renovated to five stars, with five of those bedrooms on the ground floor and each holding its own bathroom or en suite. The tub is out on the patio, the lawn runs to an orchard and a practice net, and a cloakroom at the entrance takes the leads and the wellies before anything else gets walked in.

Tentsmuir is 2.5 miles off and will take the week over: pine forest, then dune, then hard sand going further out than seems reasonable. St Andrews lies one way and Dundee the other for the days that need a town. What this place does not do is pretend to be small. Twelve people and four dogs will fill it properly, and a couple booking it would be paying for five bedrooms they never open a door on.

Tentsmuir Beach is two and a half miles off and mostly sky. Sand opens out wide at low tide behind one of the fastest growing dune systems in Scotland, and dogs are welcome every month of the year. The currents beyond the shoreline are strong, so treat it as a beach for running along rather than swimming from.

  • Sleeps: 12
  • Dogs welcome: 4
  • Hot tub: Yes, on the patio beside an acre of safe enclosed lawn
  • Nearest dog beach: Tentsmuir Beach, 2.5 miles
  • Best for: A big gathering with four dogs and an older one that cannot manage stairs

Y Daflod, Conwy

A barn conversion above Llannefydd in Conwy with an enclosed garden, an outside shower and a private hot tub

Y Daflod was a hayloft until 2019 and is now a five star barn for eight, four king bedrooms, five bathrooms, a private tub and a games area at the back. The boundary goes the whole way round the garden and the fields start on the other side of it. An outside shower by the door deals with whatever two dogs bring home, and a wood burner in the lounge deals with the rest of the evening.

This is the inland entry and the distances say so. Pensarn is the nearest dog beach at 4.7 miles, which still clears the five mile bar, but our nearest listed walk is Llyn Brenig at nearly eleven. The lanes climbing out of Llannefydd carry almost no traffic and do the daily job better than any car park with a signpost in it, though anyone booking this for the sea should understand the sea is a short drive rather than a view.

The nearest sand is Pensarn Beach at Abergele, just under five miles away and the longest drive to a beach in this guide. Conwy's public space order closes the zone behind Sea Road to dogs from May to the end of September, so a summer stay means carrying on to the open stretches either side of it. Out of season the whole beach is walkable.

  • Sleeps: 8
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, private to the house in the enclosed garden
  • Nearest dog beach: Pensarn Beach, 4.7 miles
  • Best for: Two couples who want empty lanes from the door and the coast kept for day trips

Forest Edge, Hampshire

A five bedroom house at Everton in Hampshire with an enclosed garden and a hot tub, set between the New Forest and the Solent

Everton sits on the line between the forest and the water, and Forest Edge stands on it. Five bedrooms, twelve beds, three dogs, five stars, an enclosed garden with the tub in it and a wood fire for the evening. Milford on Sea is 1.3 miles down the road with the Isle of Wight sitting across the Solent and the Needles at the far end of the view, and the trees begin immediately behind the house.

Hurst Spit runs a mile and a half out from the end of that beach to a castle Henry VIII put up on the shingle, flat the entire way and one of the odder walks on this coast. Shingle is the honest concession: it is harder work underfoot than the sand at West Runton or Tentsmuir, and a dog that wants to run flat out will be happier on the Keyhaven marsh path 1.8 miles away. Three bathrooms between twelve people is the other figure to check.

Milford on Sea Beach is a mile and a bit south, shingle giving way to sand, with Hurst Castle out on its spit and the Solent behind it. Parts of the beach can be restricted between May and September, so this is one to check the signage for on the day rather than assume; outside those months it is a straightforward walk at any tide.

  • Sleeps: 12
  • Dogs welcome: 3
  • Hot tub: Yes, in the enclosed garden
  • Nearest dog beach: Milford on Sea Beach, 1.3 miles
  • Best for: Two families who want closed woodland one morning and open water the next

Meadowside, Norfolk

A four bedroom house at West Runton in Norfolk with an enclosed garden holding a hot tub, under a mile from the beach

Nothing in this guide sits closer to the sea. Meadowside is 0.7 miles from West Runton beach and takes three dogs, a number very little of the north Norfolk coast will go to. Four bedrooms, three of them kings, five stars, an enclosed garden with the tub standing out on it, and one of the shower rooms at ground level so the wet end of the day is handled downstairs while the evening carries on above it. The owners keep stair gates and will put them out.

The beach runs under low crumbling cliffs, and those cliffs are why anybody outside Norfolk has heard of the village: the most complete steppe mammoth skeleton found in Britain came out of them. Crumbling is not a figure of speech, though, so the cliff foot is no place to leave an animal nosing about unwatched. Felbrigg Hall opens parkland and woods 2.5 miles inland and is the better of the two long walks.

West Runton Beach is seven tenths of a mile down the road, the closest beach here and the most interesting underfoot. Low tide uncovers rock platforms worth picking over, with sand and shingle either side, and dogs are welcome all year round. The rock turns slippery when it is wet, so it rewards a dog that noses about more than one that sprints.

  • Sleeps: 8
  • Dogs welcome: 3
  • Hot tub: Yes, in the enclosed garden
  • Nearest dog beach: West Runton Beach, 0.7 miles
  • Best for: Four couples, or a family grown past the stage of needing bunks, who want to walk to the sand

Anchorsholme, Lancashire

A three bedroom house on the bank of the River Wyre at Hambleton in Lancashire with an enclosed garden and a hot tub

The front door opens into a boot room, which for a house on a marsh is the right way round. Anchorsholme sits down a quiet lane on the bank of the Wyre at Hambleton, sleeping six with two wood burners, bi-folding doors to an enclosed garden and the tub at the far end of the lawn. There is an outside WC by the garden, which reads like nothing on a listing and matters a great deal when a dog is halfway across wet grass.

One dog only, and that is the plainest limit in this guide. Rossall at Cleveleys is the nearest dog beach at 3.4 miles and the quieter sand continues north through Fleetwood, well away from the resort front. The Wyre Way crosses the lane outside the gate, so the first walk of the day costs no driving at all, and for six people with a single animal that is most of what the week needs.

Three and a half miles north, Rossall Beach at Cleveleys is flat Fylde sand running on towards Fleetwood, seawall backed in places and open to dogs the whole year. It is the least dramatic beach in this guide and comfortably the easiest to use: level, long, and walkable whatever the tide happens to be doing.

  • Sleeps: 6
  • Dogs welcome: 1
  • Hot tub: Yes, at the far end of the enclosed garden
  • Nearest dog beach: Rossall Beach at Cleveleys, 3.4 miles
  • Best for: Six people with one dog who want a river path outside the gate

Jobsons Cottage, Isle of Wight

A thatched three bedroom cottage at Niton on the Isle of Wight with an enclosed rear garden and a hot tub

Thatch over a hot tub is an odd pairing and it works, because the building is old and low and almost nothing fitted into it is. Jobsons stands at Niton near the southern tip of the island, three king bedrooms for six, two shower rooms, a drying room, and a garden fenced round the back with the tub and a barbecue in it. Two dogs are welcome, and there is no small bedroom for anyone to be quietly handed.

Steephill Cove, reached through the Ventnor Botanic Garden, is the nearest dog beach at 2.4 miles, and the country round about runs to lane, field and the drop to St Catherine's Point with its lighthouse. Being on an island does mean our nearest listed walk is on the mainland, fifteen miles and a ferry away, so the routes are worth planning before you sail rather than after. Very few people are on any of these paths, which is the trade going the other way.

Steephill Cove lies two and a half miles away and can only be reached on foot, through the Botanic Garden and down. It is a small sand and shingle cove with lobster pots stacked on the quay and a cafe about the size of a front room, barely changed in decades and open to dogs all year. Small is the operative word, so aim for low to mid tide or there is not a great deal of it.

  • Sleeps: 6
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, in the enclosed garden behind the cottage
  • Nearest dog beach: Steephill Cove, 2.4 miles
  • Best for: Six people who want quiet lanes and three equal bedrooms

The Old St Johns Church, East Yorkshire

An 1883 Methodist chapel at Burton Fleming in East Yorkshire converted for ten, with an enclosed private yard and a hot tub

The old vestibule was kept as a cloak room, so the walk gets left on its floor before the building opens up. The Old St Johns Church is an 1883 Methodist chapel at Burton Fleming, sleeping ten across five bedrooms that each have a bathroom, under vaulted ceilings, exposed joists and a stained glass rose window. Two dogs are welcome, two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, and an enclosed private yard behind holds the tub.

Speeton is the nearest dog beach at 3.2 miles and Filey Brigg with the Cleveland Way is 6.1, so the sea here is a morning out and back rather than a walk from the door. What the village offers instead is dry chalk valleys running off in every direction under footpaths, with a green and a post office at the middle of it. A yard is also not a lawn, so two dogs get paving outside the door and the Wolds a few minutes past it.

Speeton Beach is three miles north under the chalk, a secluded cove south of Flamborough Head with no dog restrictions at any point in the year. Getting down is a cliff descent, and the beach vanishes completely at high water, so the tide table is genuinely not optional. What the effort buys is a stretch of coast with almost nobody else on it.

  • Sleeps: 10
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Hot tub: Yes, on the paving of the enclosed private yard
  • Nearest dog beach: Speeton Beach, 3.2 miles
  • Best for: Ten people who want the Wolds daily and Filey or Bridlington when the mood takes

Llys Andreas House, Gwynedd

A seven bedroom period house at Tal-y-Bont in Gwynedd with an enclosed garden, a hot tub and a view towards the sea

Seven bedrooms and six bathrooms is the arithmetic that decides whether fourteen people enjoy a week. Llys Andreas is three storeys of period building at Tal-y-Bont near Harlech, entered at a rear boot room with a WC of its own, so the wet end of the house stays properly separate from the rest. The conservatory looks over an enclosed garden towards the sea, and the tub, the furniture and a charcoal barbecue are all out on it.

Dyffryn Ardudwy sand is a mile away, the shortest distance to a dog beach here bar one, and Shell Island at Mochras turns into an island at high water behind its dune and wildflower. The constraint is written into the dog policy: two animals, and neither of them upstairs. Underfloor heating runs through the hall and both sitting rooms, so in practice that is where they elect to lie anyway, which takes most of the sting out of the rule.

Dyffryn Ardudwy Beach is a mile below the village, wide Cardigan Bay sand at low tide with dunes behind and year round access for dogs. There is a Neolithic burial chamber on the way down to it, which is the kind of detail that makes the same walk worth doing twice in a week.

  • Sleeps: 14
  • Dogs welcome: 2, ground floor only
  • Hot tub: Yes, in the enclosed garden
  • Nearest dog beach: Dyffryn Ardudwy Beach, 1.0 miles
  • Best for: Fourteen people near Harlech who can keep two dogs downstairs

Practical Advice for Booking a Hot Tub Cottage Near the Coast

Across twelve counties the same handful of things decide whether the week works:

  • Read the dog number against the bed number. Anchorsholme sleeps six and allows one. Llys Andreas sleeps fourteen and allows two. Hartnolls sleeps two and allows three. It is the ratio rather than the size of the house that settles who can come.
  • Five miles to sand is not five minutes to sand. Every property here has a dog beach inside five miles, but West Runton at 0.7 and Pensarn at 4.7 are different holidays. Read the figure, not the label.
  • Look up the beach rules for the month you are going. Dog restrictions on the British coast are usually seasonal and usually cover the busiest stretch of a resort beach, which is why the quieter sand north of Fleetwood and out on the Solway earns its place on this list.
  • Work out where the tub actually stands. Level decking at Woolacombe, a pergola at Mawbray, chapel paving at Burton Fleming, an acre of lawn at Leuchars. At eleven at night with a wet animal these are not the same proposition.
  • Find the drying end of the house before you book. A boot room at Hambleton and Tal-y-Bont, a utility with a shower off it at Mawbray, a ground floor shower at West Runton, outdoor showers at Polruan and Llannefydd. That is the feature that saves a sandy week.
  • Keep the dog out of the water. Treated water does an animal no good and claws do a liner no good either. What you are booking is the enclosed garden around the tub.

Map of Dog Friendly Hot Tub Cottages Near a Dog Friendly Beach

Twelve counties, from the Solway marshes to the southern tip of the Isle of Wight, with very little in the middle of the country because the beach condition rules it out. The map settles it faster than any list can: which of these stand on an estuary, which face open water, and how the twelve fall against whichever coast you had in mind.

Final Thoughts

The condition that narrows this list is neither the tub nor the garden. It is the beach. Plenty of very good dog friendly houses with hot water outside sit an hour inland, and the twelve above are the ones where an animal can be run out on open sand and brought back before anybody thinks about getting in. West Runton at 0.7 miles and Dyffryn Ardudwy at one are the two that make it a walk instead of a drive, and Y Daflod at 4.7 is the one that scrapes in.

Group size settles most of the rest. Tigh Sorcha and Ravenslaw take four dogs and are the only pair that will, while Hartnolls takes three into a lodge built for two, which nothing else here comes close to offering. Anchorsholme is out for anybody bringing a second dog, and Llys Andreas keeps both of its animals on the ground floor. Should the week turn wet, the boot rooms at Hambleton and Tal-y-Bont, the hot hose at Mawbray and the outdoor showers at Polruan and Llannefydd will earn their keep long before the tub does.
