1 / 8Galtres Lodge Hotel
York
Yes. Dogs can stay in 5 dog friendly rooms.
A Georgian townhouse hotel on Low Petergate in the centre of York, with York Minster behind it and dogs welcome in the back half of its Forest restaurant.
Step out of the doors of Galtres Lodge onto Low Petergate, turn the corner, and there is York Minster, immediately behind the hotel. Two Georgian townhouses were combined to make its twelve bedrooms and restaurant, and today it is an independently owned, dog friendly hotel in the very centre of York, with The Shambles a few steps away.
Five of the bedrooms take dogs. They are on the lower floors, for easy access to the main entrance, and each has a dog bed, a throw, a bowl and a treat ready. Room 6 is one of them, with views towards York Minster, an exposed brick fireplace and the largest bathroom in the hotel, with a walk-in shower and a separate roll top bath. Dog towels are kept at reception for muddy paws and the team can point you to local dog friendly cafes and attractions. The hotel doesn't mention a limit on dogs, or leaving one alone in the room, so raise both with the team before you arrive.
In FOREST, the hotel's restaurant, dogs are welcome in the back half, with one area kept free in case of allergies. It is a warm, rustic room of original oak beams, exposed brick walls and traditional fireplaces, open from breakfast through lunch and home-made cakes to dinner, when the lights go down, the music goes up and the à la carte menu takes over. Fish and meat on the menus include produce from the Shambles Market, just a few steps away.
Breakfast is included, from a Full Yorkshire Breakfast to the vegetarian Gardener's Breakfast, kippers or pick and mix pancakes. For a longer stretch with the dog, York Riverside: Millennium Bridge and Rowntree Park, one of Wildpack's walks, is 0.3 miles away.
Facts checked October 2026 from the hotel's own website. Details can change, so please confirm anything important, especially the dog rules, with the hotel before you book.
