Millington Wood and Millington Pastures Circular
East Yorkshire
Millington Pastures is a system of steep, dry chalk valleys north east of Pocklington where dogs need a lead among grazing sheep and highland cattle, protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Millington Wood, a local nature reserve at the start, is one of the few remaining wooded dales in the Wolds. This 6km circuit leaves the free car park and climbs out of Millington Dale to Allison Nab, then follows bridleways and the combined Yorkshire Wolds Way, Chalkland Way and Minster Way past Scoar Dale and Sylvan Dale, with a line of carved oak posts spelling GAIT IN WOLDS along the way. There is around 150 metres of climbing, on grassy slopes, stony tracks and a short stretch of quiet valley road, with some steep sections in and out of the dales.
This dog friendly walk is one for a dog that walks nicely on a lead. The grassland slopes are grazed by sheep and highland cattle, so dogs need to be on a lead across the pastures, and on the quiet lane back through the dale. Millington Wood itself is the best place for a sniff and a wander, and Millington Beck, crossed by a footbridge, gives dogs a drink and a paddle. There is little shade once you are out on the open chalk, so carry water for your dog on warm days. The car park is free with picnic tables, and there are pubs in Millington village.
