Hudson Way, Goodmanham and Londesborough Park from Market Weighton
East Yorkshire
This 12km loop from Market Weighton sets out along the Hudson Way, the traffic free path where dogs can walk off lead along the old railway line, following its course from Market Weighton towards Beverley, then climbs into Goodmanham, traditionally the site of a pagan temple to Woden. All Hallows church now stands in the village. From here the route rises to its high point at about 80 metres, with good views, before passing through Londesborough Park, where a lake draws moorhens and wildfowl, and past the remains of the abandoned medieval village of Towthorpe. The return follows the Yorkshire Wolds Way back to town, crossing the arable Weighton Clay Field on a central path. There is 158 metres of climbing, on old railway trackbed, field paths, estate tracks and grass.
This dog friendly walk starts with the easiest possible warm up: the flat, traffic free Hudson Way, where a dog with good recall can stretch its legs away from roads. Beyond Goodmanham the route crosses farmland and parkland, so keep dogs on a lead near any grazing stock and around the lake's wildfowl. There is little shade on the open fields, so carry water for your dog.
