Drewton Dale and Little Wold Plantation from South Cave
East Yorkshire
South Cave sits at the foot of the southern Yorkshire Wolds where dogs need a lead on the signed Drewton Estate land and past game bird pens, on the line of the Yorkshire Wolds Way, with a string of steep dry valleys behind it. This 9.9km circuit from the village climbs through Little Wold Plantation, a woodland above the village with a poetry bench along the way, then drops through Comber Dale into Drewton Dale. It crosses a bridge over a disused railway line and Drewton Beck, passes through the Drewton Estate and returns to the village by Austin's Dale. There are steep climbs in and out of the dales, around 180 metres in total, on woodland paths, grassy dale bottoms and field edges that get muddy after rain, with a couple of stiles and some awkward gates to negotiate.
This dog friendly walk has plenty of woodland for a dog to explore, and a dog with good recall can have some freedom in Little Wold Plantation and the dales, with Drewton Beck for a drink. Signs ask for dogs to be on a lead while crossing Drewton Estate land, and there are game bird breeding pens near the route, so keep your dog close there and follow the route guide carefully. The stiles have gaps beside them, or a loose post where a dog can slip through the fence. Park on Beverley Road or in the village centre, and the Fox and Coney Inn is in South Cave for afterwards.
