Welton Dale and Elloughton Dale Circular
East Yorkshire
Welton is a pretty village at the southern tip of the Yorkshire Wolds where dogs may need a lead for livestock on the farmland sections, a few miles west of the Humber Bridge, and the Green Dragon on its green is where the highwayman Dick Turpin was arrested in the 18th century while posing as a horse dealer. This 10.2km circuit starts by the church and heads north along a tree lined avenue past the Mill Pond to Welton Springs and into Welton Dale, a quiet valley the Walking Englishman rates as beautiful as any small dale you will find. On the way is a domed mausoleum built in 1818 for the Raikes family, then the route passes Wauldby Manor Farm and the pond at Wauldby Dam, joins the Yorkshire Wolds Way past Long Plantation into Elloughton Dale, and returns over Turtle Hill and the open wolds on footpaths and country lanes. There is 183 metres of climbing in total.
This dog friendly walk mixes the dales and plantation woodland with open farmland on the tops, giving a dog plenty of variety. The woods around Elloughton Dale are the best place for a sniff, but much of the rest crosses farmland and lanes, so keep dogs on a lead near livestock and on the roads. There is little reliable water after the springs and ponds at the start and at Wauldby, so carry some for your dog. Park considerately in Welton village, where the Green Dragon marks the start and finish.

Is Welton Dale and Elloughton Dale Circular dog friendly?
This 10.2km circuit through the southern Yorkshire Wolds is a decent choice for dog owners, earning a 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. It offers a good mix of woodland, quiet dales and open farmland, giving dogs plenty to explore — though the farmland and lane sections mean leads are often needed along the way.
Can dogs be off lead at Welton Dale and Elloughton Dale Circular?
Off-lead opportunities are limited on this route, as much of it crosses farmland where livestock may be present, and there are stretches of country lane where traffic is a consideration. The woods around Elloughton Dale offer the best chance for a freer sniff, but for most of the walk it's sensible to keep your dog on the lead.
What should I know before visiting Welton Dale and Elloughton Dale Circular with my dog?
The most important thing to plan for is water — there's little reliable supply after the springs and ponds near the start of the route and at Wauldby, so bring enough for the full 10.2km. Parking is roadside in Welton village near the Green Dragon pub, which also serves as a handy start and finish point. With 183 metres of climbing and a mix of terrain, it's a good walk for a dog that's reasonably fit and comfortable on a lead around livestock.
