Humber Bridge Country Park Cliff Trail
East Yorkshire
Humber Bridge Country Park is a 21 hectare local nature reserve in a former chalk quarry at the foot of the Humber Bridge where dogs have plenty of room to run off lead, kept clear of the ponds where great crested newts breed, worked since the 13th century and known locally as Little Switzerland for its terraced white cliffs. It opened to the public in 1986 after the bridge was built, and the Black Mill, a five sailed whiting mill and scheduled monument, still stands at the edge of the site. The park is also the southern start of the Yorkshire Wolds Way. The Cliff Trail is the longest of its three waymarked routes at 3km, looping through woodland along the old quarry faces, with an optional 103 step detour up to High View Point for the view over the estuary and bridge. Paths are well surfaced, with gentle gradients apart from one short steep slope.
This is a dog friendly walk with no livestock, and the council asks that dogs are kept under close control and cleaned up after. A dog with good recall can enjoy the woodland paths, which give plenty of shade, but keep dogs on a lead by the ponds, which hold protected great crested newts, and dogs should not swim or paddle in them. There is a big water bowl for dogs by the information point. Parking is free at the foreshore and upper car parks, with toilets at both, and the Country Park Inn is beside the foreshore car park.
