Howden Minster

The carved ruins of a 14th century chancel and chapter house attached to a working minster, viewable outside only, so a short town stop with your dog.
An unusual arrangement, and a dramatic one. Howden Minster is still a working parish church, and it is enormous, with the proportions of a small cathedral. Attached to the east end are the ruins English Heritage care for: the elaborately decorated 14th century chancel and the octagonal chapter house, roofless and open to the sky but still carrying remarkable carved detail. The chancel roof fell in 1696 and the chapter house followed in the 1750s.
As you walk round the outside taking in the carving, because the ruins are viewable externally only, your dog is on a short town stop rather than a walk. Howden is a pleasant small market town, and the Ouse and the Derwent are both nearby for something longer.
Free to view. There is no official guidance on dogs here, and since access is external only you will be walking round a churchyard, so a lead and some consideration for a working church and burial ground is the right approach. There are public toilets in Howden and plenty of places to eat and drink.
