1 / 8The Horse & Groom
Chichester, West Sussex
Yes. Dogs can stay in 3 dog friendly rooms, up to 2 dogs per room.
A traditional free house in the village of East Ashling, four miles west of Chichester, with three bedrooms kept for dogs and walks from the door.
There has been hospitality on this spot for more than two centuries, first as a forge and now as the public house of East Ashling, a village set within the South Downs four miles west of Chichester. The Horse & Groom is a dog friendly inn with three of its favourite circular walks starting at its own front door, so the first thing after unpacking can be a walk.
Dogs are only allowed in the designated rooms, which here means three of the ten bedrooms, named Goodwood, Charlton and Singleton, each with plenty of space and easy access to the surrounding countryside. A maximum of two dogs to a room, arranging it in advance makes sure one of the three is free, and the hotel doesn't mention leaving a dog alone there.
Food is the other half of the business: wholesome dishes from locally sourced produce, served beneath early 20th century paintings and contemporary art on a hand-crafted oak floor, with supper and Sunday lunch both on offer and breakfast included in a stay. Where a dog fits in at mealtimes the hotel doesn't mention, so put the question in when you reserve a table.
The bedrooms are individually designed, no two the same, with traditional oak furniture, exposed wooden beams and Hypnos mattresses, and indoors there is a bronze horse in the entrance hall and an apple green baker's counter bar brought from the Cognac region of France, original coin slot still in the surface. Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve Walk, one of ours, is 0.7 miles from the inn, and East Head is 6.1 miles on, the closest dog friendly beach in the Wildpack list.
