Stansted Forest

West Sussex

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A flat, easy loop for dogs through ancient woodland and parkland, home to fallow deer, on the historic Stansted House estate.

Stansted Forest is a large tract of ancient woodland and parkland on the Hampshire and West Sussex border, part of the wider Stansted Park estate around the 17th century Stansted House near Rowlands Castle and Emsworth. This roughly 6.4km circular walk, best with dogs on a lead around the resident fallow deer, sets out from the Main Avenue car park near Middle Lodge and follows the forest's network of footpaths and bridleways through mixed broadleaf woodland and open parkland, largely flat and easy going underfoot, though tracks can turn muddy through the winter months. The forest has long been managed for game and timber, and mature oak, beech and sweet chestnut give way in places to open rides and glades.

This dog friendly walk is a good all-round option, but not a place to let a dog run entirely free: fallow deer live throughout the forest and the woods are managed with nesting birds in mind, so a long lead is recommended for reactive or excitable dogs, particularly in spring. Livestock also graze parts of the estate, so keep dogs close if you see them. The wide, well-maintained tracks are easy for a dog of any age to cover, and the woodland canopy gives good shade in summer. There are no facilities within the forest itself, so bring water for your dog, and note that the Main Avenue car park gates close at 5pm, earlier in winter, so time your visit accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Stansted Forest dog friendly?

Stansted Forest is a solid choice for a dog walk, earning a 7/10 on our dog friendly rating. The roughly 6.4km circular route through ancient woodland and open parkland is largely flat and easy going, making it suitable for dogs of all ages and sizes. Just bear in mind that this is a managed estate with wildlife and occasional livestock, so it's not quite the free-roaming adventure some dogs might hope for.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Stansted Forest?

Off lead isn't really recommended here, at least not throughout the walk. Fallow deer live throughout the forest, livestock graze parts of the estate, and the woods are managed with nesting birds in mind, so a long lead is the sensible option — particularly for reactive or excitable dogs, and especially in spring. The wide, well-maintained tracks give plenty of room to walk comfortably on lead.

  • What should I know before visiting Stansted Forest with my dog?

A couple of practical things worth knowing: there are no facilities within the forest itself, so bring water for your dog before you set out. The Main Avenue car park near Middle Lodge (postcode PO9 6DU) closes its gates at 5pm, and earlier during winter months, so plan your visit to leave yourself enough time to complete the 6.4km loop. Cafes and pubs in nearby Rowlands Castle and Emsworth are handy for refreshments after your walk.
