The Red Lion Hotel

Bredwardine, Herefordshire, County of

Yes. Dogs can stay in 3 dog friendly rooms, up to 2 dogs per room.

A 17th century inn beside the River Wye in Bredwardine, where well behaved dogs stay in three rooms and anglers have access to around eight miles of fishing.

When the circuit judge came to Bredwardine, he held his sessions in a room that still carries the name The Courtroom, now the lounge of The Red Lion Hotel. Of red brick and dating from the seventeenth century, when it was a coaching inn, it sits beside the River Wye, near the Wye Valley Walk, and keeps its oak panelling, low beams, uneven floors and leaded windows. Come to walk, fish and explore the Welsh Borders with a dog at your side, and this dog friendly inn makes a fine base.

Well behaved dogs are welcome in rooms 9, 10 and 11, a maximum of two per room, and they mustn't be left unattended at any time. Bring your dog's own bedding and towels, and keep it off the furniture and the beds, as the inn asks. There's storage and drying for walkers' gear too, handy after a muddy day out with the dog.

Inside, settle wherever suits you: the cosy bar, the relaxed lounge, the more formal restaurant or the peaceful beer garden. The inn doesn't say which of those spaces welcome dogs, so ring ahead before you plan a meal with yours. Locally brewed lager, ale, cider and stout are on at the bar, and the menu runs from pub classics and a daily chef's specials board to hearty vegetarian and vegan dishes, all from fresh, local ingredients.

Arthur's Stone, a Neolithic tomb over 5,000 years old, rests on the hilltop overlooking the village, and Hay-on-Wye, the book town, is eight miles away. Anglers have around eight miles of River Wye fishing at The Moccas Fishery, and the inn can help move heavier packs on a long walking day with your dog.
