The Riverside at Aymestrey

Aymestrey, Herefordshire, County of

Yes. Dogs can stay in all rooms.

A 16th-century black and white inn in the River Lugg valley at Aymestrey, with five circular walks from the door and dog tables in the bar.

Five circular walks start and finish at the door of The Riverside at Aymestrey, a 16th-century black and white building in the River Lugg valley, on the southern edge of the Mortimer Forest. The river runs past the garden and the Mortimer Trail passes through the village, and at this dog friendly inn dogs are very welcome on the walks and at the inn alike.

All nine rooms can take dogs, and the inn asks you to say so when you book so it can prepare to welcome yours. The rooms are each furnished with their own character, from suites with original 400-year-old beams and stone walls to Garden Lodges at the top of the terrace garden, reached by external steps, and every one comes with homemade biscuits for your tea. The inn doesn't mention a limit on dogs, so say how many are coming when you book.

Dinner with your dog happens at the designated dog tables in the bar, among log fires, candlelight, hops and oak beams; just mention it in advance. Everything is made on site, from stone-ground spelt bread to hay and meadowsweet ice cream and lavender fudge, with produce from the inn's own kitchen garden, heritage orchard and smallholding and wild herbs from the Lugg Valley.

Wild Escapes, the eco spa, is reserved exclusively for each booking in advance, with a wood-fired hot tub, a horsebox sauna, a cold copper bath and a relaxation shepherd's hut. On the walks, keep dogs on leads, especially near livestock, and back at the inn, muddy boots and dogs are welcome for a pint by the fire or a table in the garden or by the river. Wildpack's Croft Ambrey and Croft Castle walk is 2.6 miles away.
