1 / 8The Baiting House
Upper Sapey, Herefordshire, County of
Yes. Dogs can stay in selected rooms.
A country inn in Upper Sapey, on the borders of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, whose dog friendly lodges open from the front door straight into fields.
Drovers climbing out of the Teme Valley once paused at The Baiting House for bait, the local word for a hearty bite to eat. The inn still stands at the top of that hill in Upper Sapey, and its owners keep several dogs of their own, which shows in how this dog friendly inn is run.
Dogs stay in the Deluxe Lodges and Studio Lodges, which have direct access from the front door out into open fields, with no roads to worry about; the upstairs rooms in the main house aren't well suited to dogs. Every overnight dog is given a comfortable bed, a water bowl and a welcome biscuit, with poo bags and bins on the patio. The inn asks that dogs use that bed rather than the furniture, are supervised at all times and aren't left unattended in the lodges.
Well behaved dogs can come into the bar and at least one of the dining areas, though not the main restaurant area, so you aren't left eating outside while the dog watches through the window. The bar has a log burning stove for dogs to curl up beside, with a water bowl and biscuits on hand. The kitchen sources local ingredients for its modern British dishes, from the a la carte menu to Sunday lunch and a lighter bar and snack menu.
The Deluxe Lodges come with a full kitchen and a private Jacuzzi hot tub on the terrace, and four of the six Studio Lodges have a hot tub too. Walks set off from the inn itself along footpaths, bridleways and quiet lanes in every direction, suited to a dog who wants five miles before breakfast and to one who would rather amble and then snooze.
