Titterstone Clee Hill and Cleeton St Mary

Shropshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A big day out for a fit dog on a lead, climbing a quarry incline on Titterstone Clee to a 533m summit with a hillfort and radar domes.

Titterstone Clee Hill rises to 533 metres east of Ludlow, and its flanks carry a century of quarrying for the hard black dolerite known as dhustone, with ruined buildings, old inclines and a working quarry still on the hill, a big day out for a fit dog that stays mostly on a lead across the sheep grazed common. The summit is ringed by the remains of a Bronze Age and Iron Age hillfort and is topped by a trig point and the white domes of an air traffic radar station, with the rock formation called the Giant's Chair nearby. This 12.2km circuit from the viewpoint parking area at Cleehill follows an old railway track, crosses fields to Titterstone and climbs the Bitterley Incline to the summit, then drops north towards Callowgate and loops back through Cleeton St Mary on bridleways across open common. Expect around 455 metres of climbing on rough tracks, moorland and field paths that are faint in places.

This is a dog friendly walk across open common land, but it is sheep country. The upper hill and Catherton Common are grazed year round, so dogs need to be on a lead for much of the way and especially in the lambing season, when ground-nesting birds such as skylark and meadow pipit are also breeding. The old quarries have sheer faces, so keep your dog close near the workings. There is no shade on the top and no reliable water, so carry plenty for your dog. There are no facilities on the route.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Titterstone Clee Hill and Cleeton St Mary dog friendly?

Titterstone Clee Hill is a good option for dogs, earning a 7 out of 10 on our dog-friendly rating. It's a proper adventure across open common land, but it's best suited to fit, well-behaved dogs — the 12.2km circuit involves around 455 metres of climbing on rough tracks and moorland, so it's more of a big day out than a gentle stroll. There are no facilities on the route itself, though you'll find pubs and shops back in Cleehill and Ludlow.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Titterstone Clee Hill and Cleeton St Mary?

Off-lead time is limited here — the upper hill and Catherton Common are grazed by sheep year round, so dogs need to be on a lead for much of the walk. This is especially important during lambing season, and worth bearing in mind for ground-nesting birds like skylark and meadow pipit that breed on the common. The old quarry workings also have sheer faces, so keeping your dog close near those areas is essential.

  • What should I know before visiting Titterstone Clee Hill and Cleeton St Mary with my dog?

A few things are worth planning for before you head up. There's no shade on the summit and no reliable water source on the route, so bring plenty of water for your dog — more than you think you'll need. The paths can be faint in places and the terrain is rough, so this walk suits a fit, experienced dog rather than a young pup or a nervous one. Park for free at the viewpoint parking area beside the A4117 on the eastern edge of Cleehill village, where the circuit begins.
